With Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, nearing its release date, Empire magazine has recently published new photos from the movie.
Newly released photos reveal Matt Damon in his role as Odysseus and feature a massive battle sequence from the classic story. These images offer the first clear glimpse of director Nolan’s vision for bringing this ancient tale to the screen.

This movie is director Christopher Nolan’s reimagining of the classic tale of Homer’s Odyssey. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, and his difficult journey home following the Trojan War.
He must overcome terrifying creatures and strong enemies on his quest to reunite with his wife, Penelope, who is played by Anne Hathaway. The film also stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and a talented ensemble cast.
Nolan began writing the screenplay in early 2024 and soon after teamed up with Universal Pictures to produce the film. They shot scenes in various locations around the world, such as Greece, Morocco, Italy, Scotland, and Iceland.
With a budget of approximately $250 million, this film is Christopher Nolan’s most costly to date. It’s also a first for him – the entire movie was filmed using IMAX 70mm cameras.
Nolan was fascinated by Odysseus’s complex personality. He saw him as a brilliant and cunning strategist, and wanted to portray that intelligence and complexity in the film.
The film will be released in theaters on July 17, 2026. Universal Pictures even started selling tickets for IMAX 70mm showings a year in advance, and they quickly sold out – many within just a few hours.
New photos from Empire magazine reveal the massive scale of the upcoming movie, showcasing Damon and a huge battle sequence. Considering the cast, the film’s scope, and its visual style, it appears Nolan is striving to make this his most ambitious project to date.
