Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed a new Stargate TV series is in development for Prime Video. This is the first significant return to the Stargate universe in more than ten years, and it’s being led by someone with a history on the original show.
A Long-Awaited Return
After a long and troubled journey with many setbacks and disappointing attempts, the Stargate franchise is at last progressing again, much to the relief of fans.
Prime Video is developing a new series created by Martin Gero, a veteran of the Stargate franchise. Gero previously worked on Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, and Stargate SG-1, and most recently led the shows Quantum Leap and Blindspot for NBC. He will be the creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner for this new project.
Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell (known for their work on Obi-Wan Kenobi and Monarch) are executive producers, alongside Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, the creators of the Stargate film. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, who were instrumental in the original Stargate TV series, are serving as consulting producers.

Gero Returns to Where It All Started
Gero spoke about his history with the franchise in the official announcement.
Gero shared that their first television job two decades ago was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis. They spent five years working on all three Stargate series, stating it fundamentally shaped their understanding of television production. Gero expressed excitement about leading the franchise into a new era with Amazon MGM Studios, dedicating the continuation to longtime fans who have kept the spirit of Stargate alive, while also promising a remarkable experience for new viewers.
Nick Pepper, who leads US streaming TV development at Amazon MGM Studios, announced that Stargate is a long-lasting and popular franchise that has fascinated viewers for decades with its imaginative stories about humanity’s role in the universe. Working with Martin, Tory, and Joby, they are excited to create a new installment of Stargate for Prime Video viewers worldwide, building on the show’s history while taking it in a bold and emotionally impactful direction.

Stargate’s Legacy
The Stargate story started with the 1994 movie directed by Roland Emmerich and featuring Kurt Russell and James Spader. It soon grew into a large and popular science fiction series.
I’m so excited for the new series! It’s bringing back what made the original so great – the idea of traveling to different planets through a wormhole. And it’s not just about space travel; they’re promising lots of military action, stories inspired by mythology, and complex political intrigue, all of which were huge parts of why I loved the show in the first place.
What Comes Next?
Although details like actors and a premiere date haven’t been revealed yet, the show seems to be progressing smoothly. With key people from the original Stargate involved and Amazon committed to using its MGM content, a revival of the series appears to be happening – much to the delight of fans.
