Next year, Prime Video is releasing a unique comic book adaptation called Spider-Noir, a live-action series featuring a detective version of Spider-Man from an alternate universe. The character gained popularity through the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, where Nicolas Cage provided the voice. Now, Cage will play the live-action Spider-Noir. Recently revealed posters from CCXP Brazil show that this 1930s-set version of Spider-Man isn’t actually Peter Parker – or at least, not entirely.
As a big Spider-Man fan, I immediately noticed something cool in the movie posters – the sign for Spider-Noir’s detective agency says “B. Reilly.” That name really hit me because it’s a nod to Ben Reilly, who a lot of us who grew up reading Spider-Man in the ‘90s will remember! He was the “Spider-Clone” from the famous Clone Saga storyline that went on for years in the comics. Basically, he was a genetic twin of Peter Parker, sharing all his memories up to a certain point. He took the name Ben Reilly as a tribute to Uncle Ben, and Reilly was his Aunt May’s family name. Eventually, he even became his own hero as the Scarlet Spider, and he’s still appearing in the comics today!
Giving Nic Cage’s Spider-Man the name Ben Reilly in Spider-Noir seems like Sony’s way of acknowledging he’s essentially Peter Parker, likely because they’re keeping the name “Peter Parker” for the main movie universe. We suspect the name change is for this reason. While he’s called Ben Reilly, we don’t think this version is intended to be a clone, though anything is possible. Spider-Noir is a live-action series inspired by the Marvel comic Spider-Man Noir. The show follows Ben Reilly, a weary private investigator in 1930s New York, as he’s pulled back into the world of heroism and forced to confront his past as the city’s only superhero.
Viewers will be able to watch the series in both black and white and color. Alongside Nicolas Cage, the cast includes Jack Huston, Abraham Popoola, and Brendan Gleeson. Currently, the series is scheduled to be released sometime in 2026. It will be interesting to see if the release date aligns with the theatrical release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, potentially giving fans two different live-action Spider-Man experiences at the same time. We’ll find out when Spider-Noir premieres on Prime Video next year.
