New SPIDER-NOIR Images Show Nic Cage as a ’30s Era Spidey

So far, we’ve only seen a few pictures from the upcoming Prime Video series Spider-Noir, offering just a small peek at this alternate version of Spider-Man. We saw a shot of the hero in costume and a photo of his detective agency’s door. Now, thanks to Esquire magazine, we have several new images that finally show Nicolas Cage—without his mask—as Ben Reilly, the detective Spider-Man set in the 1930s. Cage originally played this character in animated form in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The new photos, like the TV series itself, will be available in both black and white and color.

Nicolas Cage isn’t playing the traditional Spider-Man; his character is called “The Spider,” inspired by classic heroes from the 1930s like The Shadow. While connected to Spider-Man’s story, he’s not Peter Parker – instead, he’s Peter Parker’s clone, Ben Reilly, to better suit Cage’s age. Cage plans to base his performance on Humphrey Bogart, particularly his role in The Maltese Falcon. However, the showrunner, Oren Uziel, says Cage’s portrayal will be a mix of 70% Bogart and 30% Bugs Bunny – a uniquely Nicolas Cage approach! This marks Cage’s first-ever television series after a long and successful film career.

Chris Miller, a producer on Spider-Verse, described a new character who is quite different from the traditional Peter Parker. He’s older, more cynical, and willing to get into a fight, even when intoxicated. The character is named Ben Reilly, and according to Miller’s partner, Phil Lord, there’s a specific reason for this name that will be revealed later. The name is a nod to Peter Parker’s history – “Ben” honors Uncle Ben, and “Reilly” references Aunt May’s family name.

The animated series Spider-Noir will feature familiar faces from Marvel Comics in new roles. Lamorne Morris (from New Girl) will play Robbie Robertson, a reporter for the Daily Bugle. Li Jun Li (from Sinners) will star as Cat Hardy, a mysterious character inspired by 1930s actress Anna May Wong – a version of the Black Cat (Felicia Hardy) known to Spider-Man fans. The series’ main villain will be Silvermane, played by Brenden Gleason, another classic Spider-Man adversary.

Flint Marko, also known as the Sandman, is likely to be a major villain in this series, and Jack Huston from Mayfair Witches will play him. Karen Rodriguez stars as Janet, a clever and helpful assistant to the detective, who also happens to be a comic book fan. Everything revealed so far suggests a new and interesting approach to this well-known story, and hopefully, the show will deliver on that promise.

Spider-Noir will debut on MGM+ in the U.S. and will be available worldwide on Prime Video this spring.
