New ‘Spider-Man 4’ Director Opens Doors For Spider-Man To Appear in ‘Shang-Chi 2’

As a seasoned gamer and lifelong MCU fanatic, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of Daniel Destin Cretton helming the next Spider-Man installment. Having witnessed his remarkable work with Shang-Chi, I’m confident that he’ll breathe new life into our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Just about a year ago, it became public knowledge that a fresh Spider-Man movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was being worked on. Regrettably, Jon Watts decided to part ways with this project due to the difficulty of matching the success of “No Way Home” and his desire to focus on ventures beyond the MCU.

Lately, a few possible directors have been under consideration, and as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Daniel Destin Cretton has emerged as the front-runner for the directorial role in the upcoming movie.

Aficionados of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are aware that Daniel Destin Cretton isn’t new to the franchise. He has previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and will also be in charge of two episodes in the upcoming Wonder Man Disney+ series. Moreover, Cretton is poised to reprise his roles as both writer and director for Shang-Chi 2, given the success of the initial film. He sealed an all-encompassing agreement with Marvel in December 2021, expressing his excitement about continuing his partnership with Marvel Studios and working on fresh projects alongside Onyx Collective.

Given that Cretton is currently involved with various Marvel Cinematic Universe productions, it’s not unreasonable to suppose that Spider-Man might show up in the sequel of ‘Shang-Chi’, and similarly, Shang-Chi could potentially be part of ‘Spider-Man 4’.

Information about the stories of both films is still limited, but it’s anticipated that Shang-Chi 2 will explore the origins and importance of the Ten Rings, which are said to be crucial in forthcoming multiverse narratives. Similarly, Spider-Man 4 is reportedly set to emphasize multiverse concepts, and potentially incorporating Shang-Chi could explain his character’s previous absence and delays, as hinted by the film’s lead actor a year ago.

In the comic book universe, Spider-Man and Shang-Chi haven’t met up until now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but they have worked together on various occasions. Interestingly, Shang-Chi has taught Spider-Man martial arts to boost his combat abilities when Peter Parker lost his spider-sense. Both characters have also been members of notable superhero teams like the Avengers in their respective stories.
