Empire magazine has released a new preview of The Mandalorian and Grogu, revealing what fans can expect from Din Djarin and Grogu as they prepare for their first big-screen adventure in a Star Wars movie.
The movie hits theaters May 22, 2026, and continues their story after the events of Season 3.
Din Djarin’s Mission Has Shifted
Jon Favreau told Empire that Din Djarin has evolved since we first met him. He’s no longer just a solitary bounty hunter. After his experiences with Grogu – breaking his own rules, battling the Empire, and aiding Bo-Katan in retaking Mandalore – his focus has shifted. As Din stated at the end of Season 3, he now wants to fight for the side of good rather than simply working as a mercenary.
Now, Din Djarin is directly involved in the New Republic’s work to bring peace to the galaxy. In the movie, he takes missions from Colonel Ward, played by Sigourney Weaver, and teams up with ex-Rebel soldiers at Adelphi Base. Zeb Orrelios, who had a small appearance in Season 3, is a key character this time around, and Jon Favreau believes even viewers who haven’t seen the Rebels series will find him interesting.

A Larger Story, But Still About Din and Grogu
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really glad to hear that even with everything expanding in this new story, the heart of it all is still Din and Grogu’s connection. It’s been a while since we’ve had a Star Wars film – the last one was The Rise of Skywalker back in 2019 – and it’s comforting to know this one still centers on their journey together. Jon Favreau has said it’s continuing those classic Star Wars ideas about growing up and learning from a mentor, and that both Din and Grogu will keep evolving as characters, which is really exciting!
The Big-Screen Adventure Ahead
The galaxy is still recovering from the Empire’s fall when Din Djarin and Grogu embark on their most important adventure yet – a visually stunning story created for IMAX that will kick off the next chapter of Star Wars. Creator Jon Favreau has said this season will move the story forward, showing how Din and Grogu’s unique bond evolves as they take center stage.
