HBO has shared four new images from the recently released trailer for their upcoming series, Lanterns. These images give a strong sense of the show’s overall tone and direction within the DC Universe.

The latest images for Green Lantern focus more on the detective story and less on the grand, space-faring aspects of the character.

The new images showcase Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, and Kelly MacDonald as a sheriff, and the overall feel is more akin to a small-town crime story than the typical Green Lantern adventure.

This aligns with what we discussed after seeing the initial preview. It emphasized a very basic storyline, with characters having few powers, almost no reliance on the typical energy source, and a noticeably different feel than traditional Lantern stories.

The New Lanterns Images Focus On Character, Not Spectacle

The initial image focuses on John Stewart, seemingly at a town hall meeting or community event. He appears serious and guarded, as if aware he’s being observed by those around him.

A new image features Hal Jordan outdoors in a small, dusty town, emphasizing the down-to-earth, all-American feel that HBO and DC Studios are aiming for with the show.

The latest preview offers a clearer view of Kelly MacDonald’s character as a police officer, showing her in uniform at what appears to be a small-town rodeo.

The last picture depicts Hal and John in a bar, and Hal appears to be explaining something significant to John.

Overall, these four images emphasize that the Lanterns story is primarily a character-focused, small-town mystery, with the Green Lantern superhero elements playing a supporting role.

It Backs Up The Budget Concerns

That is also why the images are only going to add more fuel to what fans have already been saying.

As we pointed out in our initial trailer analysis, the teaser contained very few significant special effects, beyond a quick shot of Hal Jordan flying. It lacked the large-scale energy constructs, alien worlds, and creative visuals that fans typically anticipate from a Green Lantern movie.

These new stills do not change that impression at all. If anything, they double down on it.

Everything about the images says Lanterns is staying small, grounded, and controlled.

The Images Also Fit The Fan Backlash

The stills also arrive after the trailer got hit with a lot of criticism online.

Viewers criticized the preview, saying it didn’t capture the essence of Green Lantern. They also wondered why Hal Jordan and John Stewart appeared to be using the same Power Ring, and many noticed the surprising absence of green colors typically associated with the character.

Some viewers also criticized the show’s realistic style, saying it felt more like True Detective (created by the same person) or a local crime drama than a science fiction series about police in space.

These new images probably won’t ease the criticism, as they don’t showcase the more fantastical, science fiction elements of the show.

The Hal Jordan Timeline Theory Still Makes Sense

As a huge cinema fan, I’ve been following the buzz around this film, and the latest pictures seem to really support the idea that the story in Lanterns isn’t happening in one single timeline. It looks like things are unfolding across different periods, which is incredibly exciting!

We’ve suggested that Hal Jordan’s claim of being the only human Lantern might be true within the timeline of certain story arcs, specifically those happening before Guy Gardner becomes a Lantern.

The idea was supported by Chris Mundy, the show’s creator, who confirmed the story jumps between different time periods.

Lanterns premieres on HBO in August.
