As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the casting news for the upcoming DC Universe show “Lanterns” has left me somewhat perplexed. While Kyle Chandler is undoubtedly an exceptional actor with a wealth of talent, the idea of him playing Hal Jordan feels like a stretch for me.
In the realm of the DC Universe, James Gunn and Peter Safran are overseeing numerous upcoming projects. Some of the imminent releases include an animated series titled “Creature Commandos” and a 2025 debut for “Superman,” in addition to several live-action shows showcasing well-known DC characters.
Among the upcoming series, there’s one titled “Lanterns” that highlights the primary roles of three Green Lanterns: Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner.
Previously, it’s been confirmed that Nathan Fillion plays Guy Gardner in the show. Interestingly enough, he was cast before the official announcement of the project. The roles yet to be filled are John Stewart, speculated to be a younger actor, and Hal Jordan, for whom the studio is looking for an experienced actor with a mentor-like persona.
Lately, it’s been revealed that Josh Brolin was proposed to play Hal Jordan, but fans responded unfavorably due to age concerns. Subsequently, it appears Brolin declined the offer, and as of now, Deadline suggests that Emmy-winning actor Kyle Chandler is actively discussing the role.
Kyle Chandler is well-known for his exceptional acting roles, particularly as Coach Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights and John Rayburn in Bloodline, demonstrating his remarkable talent for drama. He has also appeared in significant films such as King Kong, Super 8, and the Godzilla series, solidifying his status as a versatile actor across various film and television projects.
Yet again, fans have voiced their displeasure with this acting selection, mainly because Chandler is presently 59 years old. Some have also denounced it as a cost-cutting measure, fueling broader worries about the caliber of casting, wardrobe, and set design in Gunn’s DC Universe.

It seems that DC Studios/WB is facing financial difficulties 😕, though it’s not necessarily a negative decision, as they had set their sights on more ambitious projects, but unfortunately fell short of the necessary resources.

It appears from the buzz that all potential candidates for the Hal Jordan role have been more mature-aged. This suggests the studio might not plan for Hal to be the main Green Lantern in the DCU, as it seems John Stewart is being lined up for this key position according to the latest updates.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but speculate about the potential future of Hal Jordan in this series. Given the characters we’ve seen so far, it seems plausible that Hal could be nearing retirement or facing an unfortunate fate by the time the show reaches its conclusion.
