It seems the franchise is poised for growth once more, as Deadline reveals that a new ‘Gremlins’ film is being worked on. This project appears to be part of Warner Bros.’ efforts to revitalize cherished franchises, much like their approaches with ‘The Lord of the Rings’, ‘The Matrix’, and ‘The Goonies’.

Information regarding the upcoming ‘Gremlins’ movie is scarce; we don’t know if it’s a follow-up, restart, or prequel. Yet, the fact that it’s part of the lineup indicates Warner Bros.’ plan to profit from franchises that evoke nostalgia, alongside their projects spearheaded by creative auteurs.

Back in 2016, Galligan announced that Chris Columbus, Steven Spielberg, and Warner Bros. were all keen on creating “Gremlins 3”. At that time, Carl Ellsworth was working on the script. In an interview from 2017, Columbus disclosed that his script had a dark and twisted theme, questioning whether Gizmo should meet his end. By November 2020, Columbus mentioned that they would opt for traditional puppets and animatronics instead of CGI for the gremlins. However, it remains uncertain if this decision still stands.

In 2019, Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the ‘Gremlins’ name and franchise. Subsequently, their parent company, WarnerMedia, gave the go-ahead for an animated prequel series for their streaming service, Max.
