For days, Nathan Fillion and the cast of Firefly have hinted at a big reveal. Now, the news is here: a new animated Firefly series is in development, featuring the original actors! The story will take place between the original series and the movie Serenity. While many fans were hoping for a live-action revival, this animated series is a welcome surprise – it’s much more than just a promotional stunt. We’re thrilled to get a new story and see how these beloved characters continue to develop. Here are the details we have so far.
Nathan Fillion announced at Awesome Con that a new animated series based on Firefly is in the works. The news came on the same day the planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was cancelled, but fans are happy to embrace this new dose of nostalgia. Fillion shared the update during a panel with many of his former Firefly co-stars, including Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Jewel Staite. It sounds like the entire original cast will reprise their roles by voicing their characters in the animated series, with Adam Baldwin also joining the project.
Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters are leading the new animated Firefly series, and they’ve finished writing the first script. While Joss Whedon isn’t working on this project, Nathan Fillion has confirmed Whedon supports it.
As reported by Deadline, the new series will take place between the events of the original Firefly TV show (2002) and the movie Serenity (2005). It aims to build upon the existing story without changing anything that’s already been established. You can see some early concept art above.
The creators of a potential animated Firefly series have most of the cast and story ready, but they still need a network or streaming service to pick it up. They’re currently pitching the show, and there’s hope Hulu might be a good fit, as they seem to be looking for shows that appeal to fans of older genres.
