As a dedicated Cyberpunk enthusiast who has been following this franchise since its rocky debut, I must admit I’m both intrigued and puzzled by Netflix‘s latest move. Much like a cyber-enhanced mind grappling with an enigma, I find myself yearning for more details about this mysterious new Cyberpunk project.
Netflix appears to be revisiting Night City, but the exact timeline remains unclear. It’s also uncertain what specific plans Netflix has when they return to this setting or if this upcoming animated series is linked to their previous anime adaptations based on video games. Recently, Netflix and CD Projekt Red have revealed a teaser trailer for an enigmatic new Cyberpunk project, yet they’ve withheld any further details about it.
During this year’s digital Geeked Week festival, Netflix announced plans to revisit the futuristic realm of Cyberpunk 2077, focusing on technology and body modification. This upcoming animated series is tentatively titled simply as “Cyberpunk” without any specific year designation for now.
As for now, that’s pretty much all the information we have on the subject. Both the streaming platform and CDPR have indicated that they will share more details “soon.
Scant details could mean the absence of information might be significant. This won’t be the first animated series from the franchise to premiere on Netflix. Back in 2022, these two companies introduced us to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a ten-episode miniseries inspired by CD Projekt Red’s video game. This show focused on a street kid trying to navigate the dangerous Night City and survive as a mercenary outlaw, also known as a cyberpunk. Interestingly, this brief teaser fails to acknowledge Studio Trigger, which was responsible for creating Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
There’s a strong possibility that the fresh series might share links with its predecessor, possibly featuring familiar characters or storylines. However, the different title and absence of references suggest it could be a standalone production. Only time will tell.
In the interim, enthusiasts of this series can rejoice over the remarkable transformation it has experienced since its original game’s less-than-spectacular launch. Despite the high expectations surrounding its release, it didn’t quite meet them (to say the least). However, it’s now on the brink of another anime spinoff, and the details remain unknown. Regardless, the very existence of this new series serves as a testament to its journey.
