New CARMEN SANDIEGO Video Game Will Finally Let You Play as the Iconic Thief

As a kid from the ’90s, I can still hear that catchy theme song and feel the excitement of chasing Carmen Sandiego around the globe. Now, it seems like my dream has finally come true – to be Carmen Sandiego! The opportunity to don her iconic scarlet jacket and hat, engage in espionage, and utilize high-tech gadgets is too enticing to resist.

Growing up in the ’90s, I’m always prepared for surprises no matter where life takes me, as I might need to track down Carmen Sandiego, the notorious thief, who could pop up anywhere at any moment. But now, the chase is over! A new video game from Netflix will let you find her without all the running around. For the first time, you’ll be able to step into Carmen Sandiego’s shoes and explore as her in the game itself.

HarperCollins Productions and Gameloft are joining forces to create an all-new single-player premium puzzle adventure game featuring Carmen Sandiego. Instead of pursuing her in the 1985 game “Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?”, where she led the global crime syndicate VILE, this time players will take on her role and don her famous red jacket and hat. They’ll get to feel the excitement of being the infamous super thief while navigating a world of espionage, using advanced gadgets, and ultimately capturing VILE.

The game’s official announcement trailer provides a great look at the art and game-style. The official press release also shared more about what players can expect during their travels:

In the Carmen Sandiego game, players will journey around the world, experiencing rich cultures in famous cities and landmarks. From the energetic atmosphere of Rio de Janeiro to the peaceful beauty of Tokyo’s shrines, every part of the globe turns into a playground as they solve intricate mysteries and apprehend VILE’s most cunning villains. Each choice players make will influence the story, as they gather evidence and race against time to prevent VILE’s wicked schemes. Whether you’re following storylines or classic game modes, this updated Carmen Sandiego adventure is sure to captivate newcomers and long-time enthusiasts alike.

Starting early next year, the popular game “Carmen Sandiego” will make its first appearance exclusively on Netflix. This streaming platform is also where you can find the character’s animated series, which debuted in 2019. A live-action film featuring Gina Rodriguez is currently being filmed here as well. Later, the game will become available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam. Excitingly, there won’t be any in-game purchases or online play options (hurray for no additional costs! Unfortunately, no multiplayer action either).
