Ever since the immense popularity of “Goldeneye” on Nintendo 64, James Bond video games have been a mainstay in the world of gaming. Although I didn’t own an N64, I did play “Agent Under Fire,” “Nightfire,” and “Everything Or Nothing” on PlayStation 2. I invested countless hours into each one. However, the years following have seen a scarcity of Bond games. That’s why yesterday’s announcement at Sony’s State of Play event has me thrilled to the core. Not only are we getting a new Bond game, but it’s being developed by IOI, creators of the “Hitman” series. Here’s the trailer for “007 First Light” below.
It seems this game shares some similarities with the latest Hitman series, featuring third-person missions offering multiple completion strategies. The narrative seems to reintroduce Bond at an early stage, introducing a new Double-O agent eager to make his mark. Expect exotic settings, advanced technology, characters reminiscent of Q and M, and let’s not forget the iconic cars! For me, someone who has just started enjoying Hitman games, this is thrilling news given the humorous undertones that are characteristic of the Bond films, and the self-aware humor in those games. A fantastic blend indeed!
Speaking about IO Interactive’s studio, Hakan Abrak, the CEO, expressed excitement about their 25 years of expertise in developing engrossing action-adventure games like the Hitman series. This significant chance to revive 007 in video games has invigorated our team. We are channeling our dedication and enthusiasm for the franchise into crafting an immersive cinematic adventure that explores the limits of what a James Bond game can offer, all while weaving a captivating new narrative. We eagerly anticipate players and fans to immerse themselves in an experience specifically designed for them.
It’s intriguing that the character model for Bond in this upcoming game closely matches Ian Fleming’s original description of the character, including the facial scar. This version doesn’t resemble Daniel Craig or Sean Connery as portrayed on screen, but it aligns more closely with the Bond from the books. I’m all in! I can’t wait to explore 007 First Light. They plan to reveal a gameplay trailer later this summer, with the game set for release in 2026.
