New Adaptation of STARSHIP TROOPERS Coming from Director Neill Blomkamp

A renowned science fiction novel that has left an indelible mark on its genre is set to receive another shot at a major movie adaptation. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, it seems that District 9 director Neill Blomkamp intends to reinterpret Robert A. Heinlein’s iconic 1959 book, Starship Troopers, for Sony/Columbia Pictures. Previously, a film based on the same title was released in 1997, helmed by Paul Verhoeven, who is also known for directing RoboCop and Total Recall. That movie garnered moderate success initially but has since gained a dedicated cult following. Contrary to popular belief, this new adaptation won’t be a remake of the 1997 film; rather, it will draw inspiration from the original novel.

The award-winning novel initially narrated an interstellar conflict between Earth and an alien race resembling insects. The protagonist is Johnny Rico, a distinguished soldier serving in the United Citizen Federation’s mobile infantry. Over time, criticism has arisen over the novel’s apparent glorification of fascistic beliefs. Upon completing the critically panned Showgirls, Paul Verhoeven opted to craft this film as a parody of propaganda films created by the United States during World War II. Regrettably, the satirical angle was lost on many cinema-goers at its release.

James Cameron’s movie “Aliens” was significantly influenced by the original novel, with a team of Colonial Marines embarking on a hunt for the Xenomorphs, which resemble insects. Interestingly, Neill Blomkamp was previously working on a direct sequel to “Aliens”, featuring Sigourney Weaver as Ripley and Michael Biehn as Hicks, disregarding other films in the series. Unfortunately, this project never took off, but it leaves us curious if any elements of it might be incorporated into this upcoming adaptation of “Starship Troopers”. At present, there’s no confirmed start date for the new “Starship Troopers” production.
