Netflix’s new Japanese series, Last Samurai Standing, is rapidly gaining popularity and is on track to be one of the most successful shows of 2025.
I recently watched a new live-action series based on Shogo Imamura’s novel, and it’s quite compelling. Junichi Okada, Yumia Fujisaki, and Kaya Kiyohara lead the cast, and the story really drew me in with its historical setting. It’s set in Japan during the Meiji period, in the late 1800s, and a lot of the action takes place at the beautiful Tenryūji monastery in Kyoto. The location itself feels like a character!
The series launched with its first two episodes at the Busan International Film Festival on September 18th, as part of the On Screen section. Then, on November 13th, all six episodes became available to viewers worldwide on Netflix. It quickly rose to become the most popular show on the platform, according to data from FlixPatrol.

The show has been very well-received by both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts a perfect 100% score from critics based on eight reviews, and a 96% audience approval rating from over 100 viewers.

Viewers on Rotten Tomatoes loved the show, especially its compelling stories and exciting action. One fan called it a “tremendous epic” and praised its inspiration from films by Kurosawa and others, even expressing their appreciation with “Arigato gozaimasu” (thank you in Japanese). Another viewer described it as “absolutely phenomenal” and said they were completely hooked, finding the overall concept fascinating.
Viewers praised the show’s exciting action sequences and how well the characters grew and changed. One fan compared it to the first three seasons of Game of Thrones condensed into a single season, noting that the storylines moved forward at a good pace and wrapped up nicely. They also appreciated the well-developed villains and the realistic way relationships formed. Many are eagerly anticipating future seasons.
People are loving Last Samurai Standing for its exciting story, great acting, and realistic portrayal of samurai life. It’s quickly becoming a hit with both viewers and critics, and is expected to be one of Netflix’s best shows this year.
