The popular Netflix series “Black Mirror” will be back for a new season – its eighth – creator Charlie Brooker announced in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum on Friday.
Charlie Brooker has confirmed that ‘Black Mirror’ will be back, and he hopes the new episodes will be true to the show’s original style. He’s glad the show has a future and believes it will return just as the world starts to reflect the themes it explores, which he finds exciting.
The news arrives as the show receives its first Golden Globe nominations. Season 7 is up for best limited series or anthology, and Rashida Jones and Paul Giamatti have been nominated for their acting in the episodes “Common People” and “Eulogy.”
Brooker explained that he approaches each new season of ‘Black Mirror’ like making a music album. He considers what themes and moods haven’t been explored yet, and how each episode fits into the overall arc. As he put it, he’s always asking, ‘What’s the next ‘track’ on the album, and where will we take the story?’ He jokingly added that viewers shouldn’t expect a lighthearted, country-style episode anytime soon.
Season 7, which debuted in April 2025, received positive feedback for revisiting the show’s signature blend of dark storytelling and technology-driven plots, especially after the somewhat uneven reception of Season 6. Critics particularly enjoyed “Into Infinity,” a continuation of the popular “USS Callister” episode, noting how it creatively built upon the original story.
“Black Mirror” is a British television series presenting standalone stories set in the near future, often dealing with the consequences of technology. Charlie Brooker writes most of the episodes, with Annabel Jones as executive producer. Originally airing on Channel 4 in 2011 and 2013, including a special episode called “White Christmas” in 2014, the show was later picked up by Netflix, which produced further seasons in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2023, and a planned season in 2025. The show also includes an interactive film called Bandersnatch and two short-form web series. A companion book, Inside Black Mirror, was published in 2018.
The series has received numerous accolades, including three Primetime Emmys in a row for the episodes San Junipero, USS Callister, and Bandersnatch. Many critics believe the show played a key role in bringing anthology series back to television, although some feel its explorations of right and wrong can occasionally be somewhat expected.
“Black Mirror” is well-known for accurately foreshadowing technological advancements, which helped it become a hugely popular and discussed show throughout the 2010s and continues to be today.
