Netflix’s Cheaper Plan With Ads Is Becoming Surprisingly Popular

It appears that an increasing number of individuals are opting for Netflix’s less expensive subscription package which includes advertisements, based on recent information disclosed by Antenna and reported by Bloomberg.

In 2022, Netflix launched an ad-supported subscription option they dubbed “Basic with Ads.” This was designed to provide a more budget-friendly choice for users, priced at just $7.99 per month. This is significantly less expensive than their Standard plan, which goes for $17.99, and the Premium plan, which costs $24.99 monthly.

2025 finds me captivated by the surge in popularity of an affordable streaming alternative. Data from Antenna reveals that nearly half of the new Netflix subscribers this year have opted for their ad-supported plan, turning it into quite a sensation!

There’s a significant increase this year compared to last year, as only approximately 40% of new clients went for the ad plan then. Even less, around 20%, opted for it in 2023.

As a movie buff myself, I couldn’t help but notice an intriguing graph shared by Lucas Shaw, a Bloomberg journalist, on social media. It showcases the remarkable speed at which the ad-supported tier has expanded over the past few years. The data leaves no room for doubt – it appears that numerous fellow cinephiles are willing to endure ads if it means saving on their subscription costs.

As a cinephile, I’ve noticed a shift in the streaming landscape over the past few years. More platforms, such as Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max, have introduced lower-cost, ad-supported tiers. Amazon Prime Video has followed suit, integrating ads into its standard plan, with ad-free viewing now available only at a premium. It seems that the era of uninterrupted streaming might be coming to an end!

It’s quite astonishing to observe the swift acceptance of these ad-supported plans by people. Many find the reduced monthly costs justified despite the brief ad interruptions. For others who are accustomed to commercials from traditional television, the ads on streaming platforms might not be a significant inconvenience.

It appears that Netflix hasn’t provided a specific number of subscribers for each subscription tier, but based on Antenna’s findings, it’s evident that an increasing number of users are opting for the less expensive plan that includes advertisements.

With streaming costs climbing everywhere, it appears that advertising-based subscription models might be the way forward for numerous platforms.
