Netflix Releases Trailer for Japanese Drama Remake ‘Asura’

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in family-centric narratives, I eagerly await the premiere of “Asura.” The trailer has piqued my curiosity with its promise of a compelling modern family drama that delves into the complexities of relationships and personal struggles.

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but wonder: isn’t it true that we all harbor something in our past we’re not entirely proud of? This intriguing query comes from the eldest sister Tsunako in the latest trailer for Asura. This question sets the stage for a series that delves into family mysteries and personal turmoil. The Japanese drama remake, helmed by the brilliant Hirokazu Kore-eda, is set to debut on January 9. With its compelling narrative and talented ensemble, it’s poised to captivate audiences everywhere.

The principal actors feature Jun Kunimura portraying the role of Kotaro, the sisters’ father; Keiko Matsuzaka as Fuji, their mother; and Masahiro Motoki as Takao, Machiko Ono’s husband. Ryuhei Matsuda takes on the character of Katsumata, a private detective who harbors affection for Takiko, played by Yu Aoi.

In the cast, Kisetsu Fujiwara takes on the role of Sakiko’s boxer partner Hide, while Seiyo Uchino embodies Sadaharu, a restaurant owner who conceals his romantic ties with Tsunako (Rie Miyazawa). These captivating side characters beautifully complement the four sisters’ performances, creating anticipation for their intriguing on-screen interactions.

Among the standout performances in this drama, I find myself particularly captivated by Yui Natsukawa, who portrays the wife of a character closely linked to my beloved Tsunako’s heart. Naho Toda plays Kotaro’s mistress, a role that adds depth to the storyline. Kumi Takiuchi brings her charm as Takao’s coworker, hinting at a potential romantic entanglement. In addition, Makiko and Takao’s children are brilliantly portrayed by Kairi Jyo, known for his exceptional work in ‘Shoplifters’, and the rising talent Maru Nouchi. Lastly, Atsuko Takahata gracefully embodies the role of Hide’s mother.

The trailer suggests that the lives of the four sisters will be turned upside down upon discovering their father’s affair, leading to a series of revelations such as Tsunako’s involvement with a married man, Makiko dealing with her husband’s infidelity, Takiko navigating complex romantic entanglements, and Sakiko grappling with feelings of inadequacy compared to her siblings.

Mikiya Takimoto, both a photographer and cinematographer, has additionally revealed touching portraits of the four siblings, skillfully encapsulating the emotional core of the contemporary family storyline in the series.

At a wrap party for the show’s finale, the four main actresses and producer Yasuo Yagi emphasized their tight-knit relationship and shared behind-the-scenes tales. Rie Miyazawa, who plays Tsunako, referred to her fellow actresses as “genuine younger siblings.” Yu Aoi, portraying Takiko, expressed that working on the series was like “a beautiful dream you don’t want to leave.

Suzu Hirose, playing the role of the youngest sister Sakiko, considered the project as very special and recounted the numerous moments of joy experienced on set. Machiko Ono, portraying Makiko, expressed her confidence in saying that this work is truly exceptional, if I may add.

In a touching family saga titled “Asura,” follow the journey of four sisters as they pursue contentment, starting from January 9, exclusively on Netflix.
