Netflix has cancelled its Spanish thriller, Billionaires’ Bunker (El refugio atómico), after only one season, reports Spanish news source El País. While Netflix initially intended to renew the show, the project was ultimately discontinued due to internal decisions.
The show debuted on September 19th and centers around a group of billionaires who take refuge in a lavish, retro-futuristic bunker while World War III unfolds. The series stars Pau Simón, Alícia Falcó, Miren Ibarguren, Agustina Bisio, and Joaquín Furriel, and was partially filmed at Netflix’s facilities near Madrid.
The cancellation is unexpected, especially considering Netflix originally promoted the show as a key part of its Spanish-language offerings. The first season ended with a cliffhanger, leaving many important plotlines unresolved for fans.
Diego Ávalos, Netflix’s head of content for Spain, previously called the series “El Refugio Atómico” the most ambitious project in Spanish television history.
Álex Pina, the creator of the show, has suggested a second season is possible. He told the Spanish website Espinof that they’ve already discussed how the story could continue, even considering this while writing the first season’s finale. They have initial ideas for escalating the drama and intensity, but haven’t yet fully planned out the overall structure of a potential season two.
