Netflix Is About to Remove This Sci-Fi Classic — Watch It Before It’s Gone

Fans of classic science fiction should be aware that Starship Troopers, the popular 1997 film directed by Paul Verhoeven, will no longer be available on Netflix after November 1st. This action-packed space movie is leaving the streaming service soon.

This movie is a classic sci-fi film with a dedicated fanbase, and many people will be disappointed to see it leaving Netflix. The news comes from Netflix’s recently published list of titles that will soon be removed from the service.

This film is adapted from Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 novel of the same title, and the screenplay was written by Edward Neumeier, known for his work on RoboCop. The story takes place in a future where Earth is governed by a unified world government called the United Citizen Federation. It centers on Johnny Rico and his companions as they join the military to combat enormous alien insects known as the Arachnids.

The movie stars Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, Neil Patrick Harris, Jake Busey, Patrick Muldoon, and Michael Ironside. It was a major blockbuster for its time, costing around $100 million to make. Almost half the budget went towards creating the impressive special effects used in the alien fight scenes.

I remember when Starship Troopers came out in 1997 – there was a lot of buzz! But honestly, a lot of critics just didn’t get it. They seemed to miss the satire completely and focused instead on the action, labeling it as either too violent or a pro-military film. It was a real case of misinterpretation, in my opinion.

I was really excited when this movie first came out, and it definitely had a good opening weekend. But honestly, people seemed to lose interest pretty quickly. It ended up making a little over $120 million globally, which thankfully covered what it cost to make, but it wasn’t the blockbuster the studio was aiming for – a bit of a disappointment, really.

Over time, people’s opinion of the movie has shifted dramatically. Initially dismissed as a silly action film, it’s now recognized as a clever and daring critique of fascism, wartime messaging, and unquestioning loyalty. Many viewers and critics now consider it a remarkably intelligent science fiction movie from its time, filled with dark humor and insightful social observations that are cleverly woven into the action.

The original film was so popular it created a whole franchise. This included several sequels – Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004), Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008), Starship Troopers: Invasion (2012), and Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars (2017) – as well as an animated series, video games, comics, and toys. These spin-offs have kept the world of Starship Troopers going strong for almost thirty years.

If you haven’t watched it yet, or if you want to rewatch it, now’s the time – it’s leaving Netflix soon! After that, it may not be available on streaming services for a while.
