As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for pop culture and a deep appreciation for the magic that unfolds behind the scenes of our favorite shows, I must admit my excitement at the recent announcement regarding Magic: The Gathering‘s animated series on Netflix. With Terry Matalas, a seasoned professional in the realm of sci-fi and fantasy television, at the helm, this project is poised to cast its spell over us once more.
During Geeked Week, Netflix surprised viewers by revealing sneak peeks of various upcoming projects, including one long-awaited project that many thought would never make it to the small screen. Fortunately, with a new showrunner in charge, Netflix’s animated series Magic: The Gathering is still moving forward.
At Netflix’s annual Geeked Week event, it was officially revealed that Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard, forthcoming Vision) will serve as the showrunner for an upcoming series. The new interpretation of this series is currently in production. Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast are working together on the production of the show. Details about the plot for the upcoming version are being kept under wraps.
Recently, there’s been a lot of buzz that the show might not be produced by Netflix. The Russo brothers, well-known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, originally started the series back in 2019. But after parting ways over creative disagreements in 2021, Jeff Kline took over as the new executive producer and creative lead.
Initially, Brandon Routh was unveiled as the voice actor for the main character, but unfortunately, that particular series never made it to air. There has been little news about the show since then. In a recent interview, Routh hinted that the project might not be moving forward anymore, yet it can still be found on Netflix under Matalas’ supervision.
In the latest development this year, Matalas has been confirmed to take on a significant TV role – that of showrunner for Paul Bettany’s Marvel-Disney+ Vision project. This exciting news was initially reported exclusively by Variety in May. Furthermore, the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard, released in 2023, garnered high praise for Matalas’ directing skills.
Richard Garfield is the brain behind the creation of Magic: The Gathering, a card game initially launched in 1993. Since then, this game has spawned a successful novel, comic book series, esports league, and digital version. Furthermore, it has been published in over 70 countries across 11 distinct languages.
