Netflix won’t be renewing Lena Dunham’s romantic comedy, Too Much, for another season. Dunham recently shared that the show was originally planned as a single season only, and that was always the intention.
Created by Lena Dunham and her husband, Luis Felber, the show Too Much was based on their own relationship. The 10-part series, which launched on July 10th, featured Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe as Jessica and Felix, a couple dealing with the challenges of a long-distance relationship, different backgrounds, and complicated family lives.
I sat in on the panel, and Dunham explained that Too Much was always conceived as a limited series, not something meant to run and run. She described it as a modern take on the classic transatlantic love story, but one that allowed them to really explore the nuances and complications you just can’t fit into a feature film. They wanted space to really delve into the characters and their relationships, and a limited series format gave them that freedom.
Dunham said she had fun thinking about the characters and even imagined possibilities for a second season, like Felix and Jess having a baby or being among the first people to travel to Mars. However, she ultimately felt the story had reached a natural conclusion. As she put it, ‘We accomplished what we set out to do, and a big part of that is knowing when to stop.’
Even though the show only lasted one season, Dunham suggested she might return to the story of Jessica and Felix someday. She compared it to finishing a job and moving on, saying she’s ready to focus on new creative projects, like imagining a different family to write about.
The show has been well-received by critics. Rotten Tomatoes gives it an 83% approval rating, highlighting strong performances by Megan Stalter and the show’s funny writing from Lenny Dunham. Metacritic awarded it a score of 68 out of 100, which also indicates generally positive reviews.
Jessica, a New York-based commercial producer, moves to London to start fresh after a difficult breakup. She finds herself living alone and unexpectedly connects with a musician named Felix at a local pub. Their relationship develops gradually as they explore love, family, and the challenges of being from different cultures, offering a sweet and relatable look at a modern, international romance.
