Netflix Developing Iconic ’80s Video Game DRAGON’S LAIR as a Movie

In the 1980s, the arcade game “Dragon’s Lair” was a pioneer in video game technology. At that time, games mainly featured simple pixel graphics of spaceships and asteroids or Pac-Man. However, “Dragon’s Lair” used real animated footage, created by Don Bluth, which was far ahead of its time. The kids at the local arcade were absolutely thrilled! Now, over 40 years later, “Dragon’s Lair” is planning a return, this time as a movie. According to “The Hollywood Reporter”, “Dragon’s Lair” is currently in development for Netflix. Ryan Reynolds will produce the film, but he won’t be playing the lead role. James Bobin, director of “The Muppets” and “Muppets Most Wanted”, will take charge of the project.

In this video game, the character you controlled was a valiant knight named Dirk. As Dirk, your mission was to save the enchanting Princess Daphne from the fierce dragon Singe, as well as outwit the malevolent wizard Mordroc. The game drew inspiration from numerous famous fantasy novels and movies. The animation in this game was created by Don Bluth, a renowned animator whose works include “The Secret of NIMH,” “An American Tail,” and “All Dogs Go to Heaven.” The game, titled “Dragon’s Lair,” capitalized on the surge of high fantasy popularity in the 1980s. This trend was driven by games like “Dungeons & Dragons” and movies such as “Dragonslayer,” “Beastmaster,” and others.

The initial arcade game titled “Dragon’s Lair” achieved immense popularity, leading to ABC ordering an animated series based on it just a year later. In this short-lived cartoon, Clive Revill, who was the original voice of Emperor Palpatine in “The Empire Strikes Back”, narrated Dirk’s escapades. While numerous sequel games were released afterwards, none matched the popularity of the 1983 game. As of now, there are no confirmed actors or production dates for a new Dragon’s Lair, but it seems that plans to revive this project are underway.
