Fans eager to watch the final episode of Stranger Things season five ran into technical difficulties on Netflix. The episode, called “Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up,” launched at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on New Year’s Eve, but many viewers couldn’t start watching right away.
Some users encountered an error message that read, “Something went wrong. We apologize, but we’re experiencing issues with your request. Please visit the home page for more options.”
Viewers flooded X (formerly Twitter) with complaints after Netflix crashed during the highly anticipated finale of Stranger Things. One user expressed their disappointment, saying they’d woken up early only to experience the crash, while another used strong language to vent their frustration with the timing of the outage.
Netflix had technical difficulties when the latest season launched, but this wasn’t the first time. On November 26th, when the first episodes of season five became available, the platform briefly went down. Netflix reported that most users were able to resume streaming within five minutes.
The fact that the streaming service kept crashing shows just how popular the show remains, even after being on the air for nine years. It also makes you wonder if Netflix has the infrastructure to handle big releases, particularly for events that capture the public’s attention like the final season of Stranger Things.
