So, I’m hearing some interesting stuff about Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery. Apparently, Netflix is in talks to potentially buy Warner Bros., and from what insiders are saying, if they do go through with it, Netflix has promised to continue releasing Warner Bros. movies in cinemas – which is a big deal, because a lot of us still love the theater experience!
People familiar with the situation asked to remain anonymous due to the confidential nature of the talks. They also noted that Warner Bros. is bound by existing agreements for movie theater releases, and Netflix intends to honor those commitments.
This marks a significant change for Netflix. Traditionally, the company has concentrated on streaming and rarely releases its own films in cinemas, only doing so briefly to meet awards eligibility requirements. However, acquiring Warner Bros.’ extensive film library and existing contracts appears to have prompted a reevaluation of this strategy.
Last month, Warner Bros. began looking for a buyer after receiving offers from multiple companies. Both Paramount Skydance Corp. and Comcast Corp., the parent company of NBCUniversal, expressed interest in acquiring it.
Netflix is also interested in purchasing Warner Bros., including both its movie and TV streaming services. All potential buyers need to submit their offers by Thursday. If Netflix succeeds, it would be their largest acquisition to date. Netflix leaders have already shared their vision for the company with Warner Bros. executives.
Those working in the film industry fear this agreement could lead to fewer major studios and a decline in the number of large-scale movies released in cinemas.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has previously stated that movie theaters are losing popularity, describing them as a “declining business.” He’s also emphasized that the company prioritizes viewers who watch on its streaming service.
Even with this possible agreement, Netflix is signaling to Warner Bros. that it will continue to support releasing movies in theaters first.
