Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are collaborating on a sequel to their popular animated movie, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, as reported by Variety.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who originally produced the film, are returning for the next installment. However, Mike Rianda, who previously directed and co-wrote it, will not be involved this time.
Guillermo Martinez, who worked on the story for the original movie, will direct the new film with JP Sans, known for his work on The Bad Guys 2. The script is being written by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, the writers behind the animated series The Great North.
Released on Netflix in 2021, The Mitchells vs. the Machines rapidly gained popularity with viewers. It received eight Annie Awards and was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
According to Variety, the long-awaited sequel is a significant achievement for Netflix, establishing a science fiction animated series that competitors haven’t been able to replicate.
The movie centers around the Mitchells, a quirky and imperfect family, who find themselves needing to rescue the world from a robot rebellion.
The movie boasts a star-studded voice cast including Danny McBride, Abbi Jacobson, Maya Rudolph, Mike Rianda, Eric André, and Olivia Colman. It also features supporting voices from Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Charlyne Yi, Blake Griffin, Conan O’Brien, and even Doug the Pug!
After completing the animated series Gravity Falls in 2015, Mike Rianda began developing the idea for this film. Sony Pictures Animation collaborated with Columbia Pictures, Lord Miller Productions, and One Cool Films to bring the project to life.
The movie’s distinctive, watercolor-like visual style was created using technology originally developed for the film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). The music was composed by Mark Mothersbaugh, who often works with the film’s directors, Lord and Miller.
The movie, initially called Connected, was originally planned for release in theaters by Sony in 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Netflix obtained the rights to distribute it outside of China. Netflix then reverted to the filmmakers’ preferred title and released the film in U.S. theaters on April 23, 2021, followed by its availability on their streaming service a week later.
The film was widely praised for its impressive animation, funny moments, meaningful themes, excellent voice performances, exciting action, stunning visuals, and positive portrayal of LGBT characters.
The film received nominations for Best Animated Feature at several prestigious awards shows, including the Producers Guild of America Awards, the BAFTAs, and the Academy Awards. It won the same category at the Critics Choice Awards. It had a particularly successful showing at the Annie Awards, winning every award it was nominated for – a feat only previously achieved by another Sony Pictures Animation film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Now that a second movie is being made, fans can look forward to more exciting adventures with the Mitchells and their robot battles.
