Netflix Axes The Sandman: Gaiman Accusations Seal Fate

Netflix is no longer involved in producing projects based on Neil Gaiman’s works due to allegations of sexual misconduct made by several women against him. Initially reported by Variety, Netflix has confirmed that the second season of The Sandman will indeed air, but there will be no more episodes produced after this.

Jennifer Maas initially shared that Netflix has indeed terminated ‘The Sandman’ series, making its second season its finale. This decision follows the allegations against the author, Neil Gaiman, which have resulted in various projects based on his work being affected or halted. For instance, ‘Good Omens’ at Amazon Prime Video will only receive a concluding 90-minute movie instead of an entire third season. Similarly, plans for Dark Horse Comics to adapt ‘Anansi Boys’ into a graphic novel have been canceled. Furthermore, Disney has temporarily suspended the development of ‘The Graveyard Book’ movie, while a musical adaptation of ‘Coraline’ is no longer in the works either.

Based on reports, Variety indicated that The Sandman series was probably going to be terminated following season two regardless. However, the accusations against Gaiman might not have positively influenced the show’s continuation. Showrunner Allan Heinberg confirmed this in his statement about the series’ conclusion. This is according to Netflix’s announcement.

According to showrunner Allan Heinberg, “The Sandman” series has always been centered solely on Dream’s tale. In 2022, when we examined the remaining Dream content from the comics, it became clear that there was enough story for just one more season. We are deeply appreciative of Netflix for reuniting the team and providing us with the opportunity to create a trustworthy adaptation. Our aim is to astonish and delight both dedicated comic readers and fans of our show in an exceptional way.

1. It’s questionable whether or not [the show] has only one more season’s worth of story left to tell. The creators might have a lot more material for further episodes.

2. Given that Netflix canceled another Gaimain-related series, The Dead Boy Detectives, it seems unlikely that The Sandman will be renewed for a third season. However, many shows on Netflix don’t go beyond two seasons, so this could have been the plan from the start.

However, it’s important to note that none of the series’ cast or crew are accountable for the allegations against The Sandman author. This statement provides them with an opportunity to assert that they are concluding the show independently, rather than due to Gaiman or his actions.
