In a recent podcast interview on “The Town”, Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria addressed this matter, commenting on the reappearance of Gascón’s past social media posts that contained offensive comments with racist and xenophobic undertones.

However, her nomination has been clouded due to her past social media comments that were insensitive towards Black people, immigrants, and Islam. These comments resurfaced in late January, sparking a significant backlash.
Despite some voices calling for her exclusion from the awards season discourse, Gascón has expressed her wish for the film to stand independently and speak for itself. Yet, it’s undeniable that these events have cast a shadow over the movie’s recognition.

Bajaria acknowledged that thoroughly reviewing social media posts isn’t standard procedure, but hinted at a possible change in approach. “It’s not usual to examine tweets in such a manner… Many are reconsidering this practice… I believe it is causing people to question whether they should reassess the process,” she clarified.
When inquired if Netflix plans to modify its practices, she acknowledged they are considering it but emphasized the operational complexities. “Will we scrutinize the social media accounts of tens of thousands worldwide every day, considering the vast quantity of original content and co-productions we produce and license? This brings up numerous concerns regarding what such a system should entail.
In the face of criticism, Netflix stands firm in their support for Emilia Pérez. Bajaria affirmed that the ongoing debate doesn’t change their decision to acquire the film. “If I were asked today, based on all I know now, we would still purchase the movie today. It’s an exceptional piece of work, brimming with creativity and boldness – just the kind of content we aim for, and it resonated profoundly with many people this year.
At the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Selena Gomez addressed the ongoing issue, expressing that while some enchantment has faded, she remains proud of her involvement in the project. “I may have lost a bit of sparkle,” she said, “but I am grateful for what I’ve accomplished and live without any regrets. If given the chance, I would gladly reprise my role in this film.
The debate surrounding Emilia Pérez has cast a cloud during award season, yet her film continues to be a significant contender. Though some have found fault with its handling of certain themes, others commend it for its daring and artistic aspirations.
