The board game Catan is a classic, and now it’s expanding to Netflix! The streaming service has obtained the rights to the popular game and plans to create TV shows, movies, and video games based on it – moving beyond the traditional tabletop experience.
As a huge fan of both film and board games, I was really surprised and excited to hear that Netflix has snagged the global rights to Catan! I first saw the news over at Deadline, and it sounds like they’re going all in – planning live-action and animated series and films based on the classic board game, The Settlers of Catan. Honestly, I figured we’d see this kind of expansion after a couple of years if things went well, not right away! But Netflix isn’t stopping there; they’re also looking at unscripted shows and even video games based on the property. It’s amazing to think about how Catan helped bring those fantastic “Euro-style” board games to a wider American audience – and really, to the world. It’s incredible that you can still grab the 6th edition and play with friends in over 40 languages!
Jinny Howe, Head of Scripted Series at Netflix US and Canada, explained that anyone familiar with Catan understands the game’s strategic depth often leads to exciting and dramatic moments. She announced Netflix is excited to collaborate on shows, movies, animated series, and games to share the world of Catan with both longtime players and new audiences.

Darren Kyman from Asmodee, Pete Fenlon from Catan Studio, and Guido and Benjamin Teuber (Klaus Teuber’s sons) will all be involved in producing future Catan projects, working with Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment. It’s safe to say the production process will likely involve some difficult negotiations and disagreements – just like the game itself!
If Netflix turns that into a TV show we’ll definitely be tuning in during board game night.
