As a longtime enthusiast of thought-provoking cinema that pushes boundaries and challenges societal norms, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming U.S. release of ‘2073.’ Having witnessed the evolution of storytelling through time travel narratives like ‘La Jetée,’ I can’t help but feel a palpable sense of anticipation for this innovative blend of genres by Oscar-winning director Asif Kapadia.
On December 27th, Neon plans to introduce the U.S. to ‘2073,’ a unique documentary directed by Academy Award winner Asif Kapadia, famous for his work on ‘Amy.’ This screening will only be available at selected movie theaters nationwide.
The film features Samantha Morton, known for ‘The Serpent Queen,’ and Naomi Ackie, famed from ‘Blink Twice.’ It takes cues from Chris Marker’s 1962 production, ‘La Jetée,’ a narrative about a time traveler striving to change the past in order to create a brighter future for humankind.
In the year 2073, this movie portrays a bleak future, where our deepest anxieties have come true. The skies are ruled by watchful drones, while heavily armed law enforcement roam through wrecked urban landscapes.
People hiding underground reminisce about a once optimistic time. Morton’s character is troubled by memories of what we now live in – our current times – crafting a story that connects contemporary challenges such as authoritarian rule, excessive technology usage, income disparity, and climate crisis.
The documentary first appeared at the Venice Film Festival and has since been featured in prestigious events such as the BFI London Film Festival and Sitges. Coming up, it’s scheduled to be screened at the IDFA and DOCNYC film festivals.
As a dedicated admirer, I had the incredible opportunity to team up with Tony Grisoni on the script, and together we brought this masterpiece to life through our production company, Lafcadia Productions.
Besides Tom Quinn and Dan O’Meara (from Neon), additional executive producers are involved, including a team from Concordia Studio and agents from Double Agent. Additionally, Film4 contributed financially to the production of the movie as well.
This year, Neon continues to support the documentary genre by creating and marketing various productions. Among these are works by directors like Andrew McCarthy, Jazmin Jones, Raoul Peck, as well as a new political documentary from Billy Corben and Jen Gatien.
