Exciting news for science fiction enthusiasts! Sony’s Columbia Pictures is reviving the ‘Starship Troopers’ franchise, and they have chosen Neill Blomkamp to pen and direct the film. If this name seems familiar, it’s because he was behind the critically acclaimed movie ‘District 9,’ which combined aliens with real-world harshness in a way that left a lasting impression on viewers. Now, he is delving into Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 novel, and I can’t wait to see what new ideas he brings to the table.
This isn’t a remake of the 1997 “Starship Troopers” film directed by Paul Verhoeven. The original, known for its excessive military atmosphere and bug wars, featured actors like Denise Richards, Casper Van Dien, and Neil Patrick Harris. Despite costing over $100 million to produce, it only managed to earn $121 million at the box office. However, it has since gained a following as a cult classic. Contrarily, Blomkamp’s adaptation is bypassing the satire and returning to the source material of the book.
The narrative of Heinlein’s book primarily revolves around Johnny Rico, a soldier progressing up the military hierarchy amidst a conflict against colossal alien insects. It also explores thought-provoking themes such as linking citizenship with military service. As for Blomkamp’s plot, it remains unclear at this point; however, given his previous works, we can expect another confrontation between humans and the menacing creatures. Interestingly, Blomkamp is collaborating on this project with his wife, Terri Tatchell, who co-wrote ‘District 9’ and ‘Chappie.’
Neill Blomkamp has had a history of collaboration with Sony. He worked on the movie adaptation of ‘Gran Turismo,’ based on the PlayStation game, which was released in 2023 and grossed over $122 million globally. Prior to that, he teamed up with Matt Damon for both ‘Elysium’ and ‘Chappie,’ two sci-fi films characterized by a realistic tone. His breakthrough project, ‘District 9,’ also earned four Oscar nominations, one of which was for Best Picture. Blomkamp is known for seamlessly integrating action with profound themes.
The 1997 film ‘Starship Troopers’ didn’t mark the end of its story. Instead, it led to several direct-to-video sequels and animated movies. Casper Van Dien reprised his role as Rico in ‘Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation’ (2004) and ‘Starship Troopers 3: Marauder’ (2008). The franchise also saw two animated films, ‘Starship Troopers: Invasion’ (2012) and ‘Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars’ (2017). Sony has been considering a reboot since 2011, but it looks like Neill Blomkamp’s involvement might be making the reboot a reality.
According to THR, although specific plot points are being kept under wraps, the upcoming “Starship Troopers” movie appears to be taking its cues more from Heinlein’s original military narrative, instead of following the satirical parody of fascism that was present in Verhoeven’s adaptation.
In addition, they noted Blomkamp’s ability to delve into profound themes while skillfully managing the tension between humans and aliens. Another point from the discussion: ‘Indeed, even Basil Poledouris’ powerful music can’t entirely erase my feeling of unease.’ This is referring to the 1997 ending, yet it demonstrates how deeply this narrative continues to resonate with people.
At present, we’re eagerly awaiting further updates. Given Blomkamp’s history of daring sci-fi productions, I’m hopeful he hits the mark with this project. If he succeeds, we could find ourselves engaged in a battle on Klendathu against the bugs once again.
