2020 saw Scarlett Johansson become a part of an exceptionally distinguished group in the Hollywood scene. That year, she garnered two nominations for the prestigious Academy Awards in acting categories. The first was for her role as Supporting Actress in “Jojo Rabbit”, and the second was for Leading Actress in “Marriage Story”. Although she didn’t win the coveted statuette for either, Scarlett has now achieved an even more exclusive accolade. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is utilizing her intense argument with Adam Driver in “Marriage Story” as a deterrent to scare off wolves.
The Wall Street Journal shares an interesting adaptation: the intense fight scene from ‘Marriage Story’ is used to ward off gray wolves, who are posing a threat to livestock and cattle in the West as their numbers increase. As these once-endangered animals recover, they have become more of a nuisance to ranchers. To address this issue, the USDA equips quadcopters with thermal cameras, spotlights, and loudspeakers. When wolves are detected, they broadcast sounds like gunshots or fireworks, as well as AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck.” Given that no animal would want to dine while rocking out to a classic, this tactic seems effective!
Researchers aim to make wolves aware that humans can be harmful. To achieve this, they play sounds of angry humans, such as recordings from movies like “Marriage Story.” Specifically, they use the scene where Johansson and Driver are arguing intensely.

In a somewhat ironic twist, despite initial doubts, the program proved effective following some troubleshooting. For instance, consider the USDA’s drone surveillance over a southern Oregon region where wolves had claimed 11 cows in 20 days. Remarkably, over the subsequent 85-day span, wolf attacks decreased to just two. It seems that the intense emotions portrayed by Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson in “Marriage Story” may be terrifying not only to wolves but to any creature that can hear their passionate outbursts.
It’s evident that the setting has a significant effect on the predators. Nonetheless, there hasn’t been any indication as to whether the wolves believe Scarlett Johansson deserved the Oscar for her role in “Marriage Story” in 2020.
