NBC Cancels 5 Shows, Including Suits LA, Found, and The Irrational, Amid Major Primetime Shakeup; Details Inside

NBC, in preparation for its forthcoming shift in primetime programming, has decided to axe five series – Suits LA, Found, The Irrational, Night Court, and Lopez vs. Lopez. This action is making room for the network’s upcoming NBA broadcasts next season, resulting in an unforeseen wave of television show cancellations.

NBC is undergoing a significant change in its TV schedule due to the upcoming $2.5 billion yearly NBA deal. While shows like Law & Order and the One Chicago universe have been renewed, other programs haven’t fared as well. This week, various scripted series, both new and returning, were officially cancelled, causing surprise among viewers and leaving fans disappointed.

One of the standout cancellations is “The Irrational,” a police procedural featuring Jesse L. Martin as Alec Mercer, a psychology professor who uses his expertise to solve complex cases. This series is inspired by Dan Ariely’s book “Predictably Irrational.” The show made a strong entrance in 2023, but its viewership dropped significantly during its second season. Despite boasting an original idea and a talented cast, it did not secure a third season renewal.

One more well-known cancellation is the family comedy series titled Lopez vs. Lopez, starring George Lopez and his daughter Mayan Lopez. Over three seasons, this show delved into family dynamics using laughter and warmth. The third season tackled topics such as aging, sobriety, and shifting family roles. Unfortunately, it was the final NBC comedy awaiting renewal, and it didn’t get selected for another round.

The 2019 revival of the famous 1984 sitcom “Night Court”, featuring Melissa Rauch as Judge Abby Stone, unfortunately did not continue after three seasons. Initially receiving decent viewership, it experienced significant year-on-year decrease in audience numbers. Despite attempts to negotiate a shorter final season, the show ultimately failed to adapt to NBC’s changing course.

Moreover, shows titled “Found” and “Suits LA” were also cancelled. While “Found” delved into the emotional complexities of missing persons cases and “Suits LA” aimed to broaden the universe of the popular show “Suits”, neither managed to secure a spot in the upcoming season’s schedule.

This surge in cancellations signals NBC’s shift in strategy towards focusing more on sports and established programs. As they redefine their prime-time persona, fans are feeling a sense of sadness over the disappearance of both new and familiar narratives. Further decisions regarding the renewal or cancellation of shows like Brilliant Minds, The Hunting Party, and Grosse Pointe Garden Society will be unveiled during NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation on May 12.
