Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern Character in SUPERMAN Was Inspired by One of the Golden Girls

For a while, there were whispers that Nathan Fillion might take on the role of Green Lantern in live-action due to his numerous animated portrayals as Hal Jordan. However, in James Gunn’s upcoming film, Superman, Fillion will instead portray a different member of the Green Lantern Corps, the hot-headed character Guy Gardner. Not only can fans look forward to seeing Fillion as Guy in Superman, but he will also reprise this role in the upcoming series, Lanterns, and in season two of Peacemaker. So, it seems we’ll be seeing a lot of Guy Gardner on our screens. In a recent podcast for DC Studios Showcase (as reported by Comic Book), Fillion shared his motivation behind playing Guy. Interestingly enough, his inspiration comes from an unexpected source – Sophia Petrillo from The Golden Girls, played by the renowned actress Estelle Getty. Here’s what he had to say:

You might have noticed that my style is reminiscent of the bluntness and candor displayed by the oldest character in “Golden Girls,” Estelle Getty’s character. She spoke her mind freely without any filters, much like how I am programmed to do. Interestingly, this character was written with a backstory where he had experienced a near-death incident involving a bus accident and subsequent coma. It’s said that this event caused some minor brain damage, which explains his somewhat eccentric behavior now. So, in essence, the bus accident served as the catalyst for his unique personality traits.

Initially, it might strike you as an unusual analogy. However, upon further reflection, it becomes clearer. Just like everyone who’s seen “The Golden Girls” adores Sophia despite her blunt remarks and lack of finesse, many share the same sentiment about Guy. The former Firefly and Castle star has drawn a parallel here, but does that mean Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Metamorpho are like Dorothy, Blanche, and Rose from the Justice Gang? We secretly hope so.

Additionally, it’s exciting to note that Fillion is taking cues from the comic book roots of Guy Gardner. Initially, he was as valiant and courteous as any Earth-born Green Lantern. However, a head injury led to a change in his character, making him the much-loved jerk from Justice League International. We eagerly anticipate watching how his portrayal of Guy will clash with Superman and classic Lanterns like Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Get ready for a Guy Gardner revival!
