Natasha Lyonne publicly shared on X (formerly Twitter) on January 23rd that she’s experiencing a relapse. Known for her role in Poker Face and her inspiring journey overcoming addiction in the early 2000s, she revealed the news with her usual honesty and humor.
On Friday night, she announced she had experienced a relapse and indicated she would share more about it, wanting to be open about her struggles. Later that day, she posted a supportive message to others facing similar challenges, reminding them that recovery isn’t always easy or direct.

As a film buff, I was really touched by what I read recently. This actress shared a message about recovery being a journey, not a destination, and it really resonated. She reminded everyone that if you’re going through a tough time, you’re definitely not alone. She talked about being thankful for support and keeping things real, saying we’re all carrying burdens – our ‘secrets’ – and that honesty is key. She even dedicated her efforts to someone she calls baby Bambo! It struck me that she’s not just sharing her own struggles, but hoping her experience can help others find their way. It’s powerful when someone can turn their hardship into a kind of guide for others, you know?
The actress encouraged her children to persevere and remain hopeful, reminding them that good things take time. She was also referencing her upcoming film, Bambo, which she wrote and will direct. The movie is a semi-autobiographical story about a boxing promoter from Brooklyn in the 1980s who is trying to manage the demands of his job and family life.
After a fan praised her honesty, Lyonne spoke up about the need for improved resources and less judgment when it comes to substance abuse. She tweeted, “We need better support systems and to end the shame – hold those responsible accountable, whatever it takes – but don’t blame me for being truthful.”
Early in her career, Lyonne faced public scrutiny due to her struggles with addiction. In 2006, she sought treatment in rehab, which she later said saved her life. Reflecting on that time in 2012, she described how close she had come to losing everything, stating, “It’s weird to talk about. I was definitely as good as dead, you know? A lot of people don’t come back.”
Beyond directing her first film, Bambo, scheduled to start filming in the summer of 2026 with potential casting of Joey King as the lead, Natascha Lyonne continues to be a major force in Hollywood. She recently founded Asteria in early 2025 – a new film studio exploring responsible filmmaking with the help of artificial intelligence – and appeared in significant productions like Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Recently, fans have seen her in the second season of the popular mystery show Poker Face and in Taika Waititi’s film version of Klara and the Sun. She’s also currently working on a new action-comedy for Sky called Force & Majeure, where she stars alongside Matt Berry. The show centers on an American mercenary and a British art thief teaming up to take on criminals all over Europe.
Many people are praising Lyonne’s recent honesty as a brave show of support, not a failure. She’s known for always being truthful, and this reinforces her image as someone who isn’t afraid to admit that even a successful return to prominence takes ongoing effort and help from others.
