Natalie Portman worked incredibly hard to prepare for her Oscar-winning role in the 2010 film Black Swan. On The Drew Barrymore Show recently, she shared how physically demanding the part was. Portman revealed she was seriously injured while playing a ballerina who struggles with her mental health, explaining that the constant physical strain of the production was much tougher than most people realize.
Natalie Portman described a scary injury she sustained while filming, explaining that the constant, demanding choreography caused a rib to shift. She said it felt like the rib moved out of place, particularly due to being lifted repeatedly during the intricate dance routines. She described the experience as both wild and incredibly physically challenging.
Getting Natalie Portman ready for the film was a huge job that began months before filming started. Her trainer, former New York City Ballet dancer Mary Helen Bower, has said Portman was completely committed to the process. To convincingly portray a ballerina, Portman trained intensely, with sessions lasting five hours a day, six days a week.
Natalie Portman maintained a grueling daily schedule focused on physical training and movie production. She frequently began her day at 5:00 AM with several hours of ballet, followed by twelve-hour days filming. After wrapping up on set, she’d continue to the gym for strength training and a mile-long swim. She kept up this demanding routine for months to perfect her performance and make her movements look natural on screen.
Natalie Portman is currently busy promoting several exciting new projects. She recently attended the 2026 Sundance Film Festival to debut her latest movie, a dark comedy called The Gallerist.
She stars as Polina Polinski, a glamorous art dealer involved in a strange plot to sell a corpse, in this film, which she also helped produce. The movie boasts a large cast, including Jenna Ortega, Sterling K. Brown, Zach Galifianakis, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
