Natalie Portman spoke candidly regarding the sexualization she experienced during her youth in the movie industry, likening it to an extended period of being typecast in roles similar to “Lolita.” In a conversation with Jenna Ortega for Interview magazine, she shared insights about the hurdles she encountered as a child actor.
She mentioned earlier that her childhood was marked by an unwanted sexualization, a common experience for many young actresses. She shared that this situation left her feeling terrified.
At the tender age of 12, Natalie Portman found her big break in the film Léon: The Professional. She later revealed that the industry’s approach towards her shaped her actions, as she felt strongly about keeping her budding sexuality a private matter rather than something forced upon her. Although exploring one’s sexuality is an integral part of growing up, she preferred it to be a personal journey, not a mandate from others.
Portman explained that the movie business often pigeonholed her into specific stereotypes during her acting career. “At every stage of my career, I found myself saying, ‘I need to steer clear of this,'” she said to Jenna Ortega. “There was a prolonged period labeled as the ‘Lolita’ type. Then there was a decade-long phase where I was the ‘woman who helps the man understand his emotional issues.’
She mentioned that she frequently needed to exert extra effort to prevent herself from slipping into those stereotypical roles. She explained that the general public’s understanding of her didn’t align with her true self. Throughout her career, she has been consistently trying to challenge those common industry stereotypes.
Portman revealed in the Smartless podcast last year how she learned to safeguard herself at a young age by presenting a serious demeanor. This behavior served as a sort of deterrent, suggesting to others not to bother her. She shared that she cultivated an image of being studious and intelligent, thinking that such a persona would make her an unattractive target for others.
In her mind, crafting the image seemed crucial for her safety, though she wished it wasn’t necessary. Yet, it turned out to be useful. Similarly, Portman thanked her mom for constantly being nearby during filming, ensuring her protection.
