Nasu Kinoko, the mind behind the Fate intellectual property, is eager to craft a game showcasing his characters with the same caliber of production as titles by HoYoverse. In an interview with Denfaminico, Nasu expressed that Honkai: Star Rail left a strong first impression on him, surpassing what he had envisioned by several fold, being “far more vibrant than I had ever anticipated.
He remembered being “extremely apprehensive” about HSR’s release due to the impressive reputation HoYoverse had earned through Genshin Impact. However, his fear transformed into admiration after trying it. Nasu commented: “I couldn’t help but think, ‘If only we could achieve this with our own characters.’
Nonetheless, Nasu pointed out that Fate Grand Order occupied a significant portion of their resources, and he considered it impractical to strive for such high-quality productions in Japan, given that only a small number of studios operate at such lofty levels.
He was thrilled when he got the chance to incorporate some of his characters into the HSR-Fate UBW partnership because of this reason. Nasu mainly kept his contributions minimal during the collaboration, offering minor suggestions regarding tone adjustments and guiding the portrayal of Saber.
In another part of the interview, Nasu referred to Genshin Impact as a “generational leap” in the realm of gacha games, praising HoYoverse for consistently delivering top-tier content. However, this high standard could also create pressure on other developers to match or surpass it.
