In the realm of Naruto, Sage Mode is a powerful state achieved when natural energy, bodily energy, and spiritual energy synchronize harmoniously. This allows the user to boost their chakra levels, enhance their physical prowess, and amplify the power of jutsus across Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, and Genjutsu disciplines. In this piece, we’ve ranked 13 characters who have mastered Sage Mode, from least to most potent.
13. Gamamaru
On Mount Myōboku, the eldest toad, Gammamaru, boasts an impressive intellect and vast knowledge. In the anime, his age is so ancient that he predates the birth of Hagoromo and Hamura. Moreover, Gammamarum is endowed with a remarkable lifespan. Beyond this, he has the unique power to glimpse into the future, though his foresight is limited; this ability is demonstrated by his prophecies to characters like Hagoromo, Jiraiya, and Naruto.
In the animated series, Gammamaru grasped the concept of Natural Energy and its manipulation at a young age. This skill allowed him to erect a towering stone statue. His mastery in this field was so profound that he instructed Hagoromo on its use, enabling him to confront Kaguya.
12. Gamakichi
Though Gamakichi’s skills weren’t prominently displayed in the comic version, the animated series revealed a diverse range of abilities for him. Specifically, we saw him shrink down in size for stealthy missions. In contrast, the manga depicted him using Reverse Summoning and summoning Naruto from any location.
or
In the manga, Gamakichi’s talents weren’t as evident, but the anime showcased his wide repertoire of techniques. One such skill was shrinking for covert operations. In the comic version, he displayed the ability to perform Reverse Summoning and call upon Naruto regardless of location.
or
Although Gamakichi’s talents weren’t prominent in the manga, they became more apparent in the anime where we witnessed a multitude of skills. For instance, he could shrink for clandestine activities, while in the comic book, his abilities included Reverse Summoning and summoning Naruto from anywhere.
or
In the manga, Gamakichi’s talents were not extensively showcased, but the anime brought out a variety of skills he possessed. For example, he could shrink to infiltrate secretly, while in the comic book, he demonstrated Reverse Summoning and the ability to call upon Naruto no matter where he was located.
In the animated series, Gamakichi showcased his skill in employing Fire Release (Katon) techniques such as “Fireball Jutsu” and working in unison with his brother and Naruto on collaborative techniques. It was evident that he is proficient in Water Release (Suiton) skills as well.
11. White Snake Sage
In folklore, the Wise Snake entity employs its teeth to deliver a potent energy into an individual through a bite. The tale goes that if the person can endure the change into a serpent, the Sage will acknowledge their transformation. Conversely, he would consume them if they cannot. As a Sage, this being is said to be well-versed in Senjutsu, imparting its use and Sage Mode to Kabuto, among other things.
In the anime, similarly to his underlings managing the cave experiments, the Sage has the skill to utilize the Yin Release for casting illusions. She’s adept at inducing hallucinations, which she can use to share the thoughts of serpents and conceal her real form.
10. Shima
In combat, she governs a minimum of two aspects effectively. Frequently, she employs these elements. However, his most potent weapon lies in his proficiency with Senjutsu. By employing this skill, she amplifies her attack’s strength and reach, even extending her tongue beyond ten meters. Shima is renowned for her keen understanding of battle conditions and the strategic nuances involved.
She swiftly chooses the optimal course of action and checks back at command headquarters to ensure its implementation. Moreover, her exceptional ability to identify threats seems to stem from her tongue, which enables her to detect and thwart adversaries effortlessly. It’s worth noting that her tongue’s warts secrete a highly corrosive slime.
9. Fukasaku
In their pair, Fukasaku proves to be an inept adversary when competing alongside his wife. They both exhibit impressive mastery over Ninjutsu and Genjutsu techniques, as well as skillful combinations of their individual abilities. Given their exceptional intelligence and cunning, they can swiftly identify even the subtlest flaws in intricate techniques such as the Rinnegan.
Shima and Fukasaku possess the skill of harnessing senjutsu, which empowers them to tap into and utilize raw natural energy. This gives them the ability to amplify their strength, speed, and resilience during prolonged battles. This was evident in their confrontation with Pain, where Fukasaku hurled Gamabunta at Chikūshodo and Naruto to shatter the Rinnegan’s restraints.
8. Koji Kashin
As a replica of one of the Sannin and an apprentice at Kara, Koji is viewed as a formidable being with extraordinary powers. He effortlessly overpowered one of Konoha’s top-tier Jonin. In the anime, he was seen as a particularly challenging adversary by Kakashi Hatake.
It seems that Koji is one of the most formidable internal forces, given his ability to effortlessly vanquish Victor and expressing confidence in defeating Delta. Notably, even Isshiki Otsutsuki acknowledged Koji’s prowess by admitting he was capable of slaying Isshiki’s vessel while significantly weakened, and furthermore, Koji showed courage in challenging Isshiki himself.
7. Jūgo
As a movie enthusiast, I’d say: In the world of Naruto, Jūgo, much like his kin, possesses the Sage Transformation – an extraordinary ability that lets him absorb ambient energy and shape-shift it to transform his physique. With this power, he can swiftly alter his form, even isolating transformations to particular body parts. This flexibility grants him a vast pool of potent chakra. Yet, there’s a dark side – as he incessantly absorbs natural energy, Jūgo and his kin are susceptible to unpredictable, involuntary outbursts of rage.
6. Mitsuki
Mitsuki has the talent to activate Sage Transformation which leads him to Sage Mode. Interestingly, he can tap into this state spontaneously, and in the anime, he does so freely whenever he wishes. Once transformed, he develops mystical Chakra serpents that encircle his body, expanding his attack radius. Additionally, a horn sprouts on his forehead as part of the transformation.
As a cinephile, I find myself often enthralled by the transformation of characters in Naruto, and Naruto Uzumaki’s Sage Mode is no exception. In this form, my hair becomes an unruly cascade of waves, and my appearance takes on a darker hue with distinct black pigmentation around my nose and eyes that deepens to a striking yellow. But it’s not just about looks; this mode amplifies my strength and speed to such an extent that I can effortlessly swipe a scroll from Orochimaru’s grasp without him even registering my presence. The anime adaptation of Sage Mode omits the horn and pigmentation, making it a slightly different but equally compelling version of this powerful transformation.
In the anime, they explain that maintaining Sage Transformation for an extended period in Sage Mode can be hazardous. Mitsuki’s physique isn’t robust enough to handle the released energy, leading to problems severe enough that Orochimaru had to regenerate new organs for himself.
5. Jiraiya
Because Jiraiya had an abundant amount of chakra, he received training in Senjutsu, a skill that enabled him to transform into Sage Mode. In this form, he tapped into the earth’s energy to significantly boost all his skills. Before transitioning into this state, Jiraiya called upon the Two Great Toad Sages – Shima and Fukasaku – who helped gather the natural energy required for Jiraiya to enter Sage Mode and served as his combat allies during battles.
Due to this change, he gained increased physical strength, allowing him to strike one of the Pain with a kick and send him flying; he’s also capable of executing combination attacks with his duo of Toads similar to Sage Art: Boiling Oil Bath. What’s more, he can perform advanced versions of his moves, such as the Super Big Ball Rasengan – an enlarged version of the Rasengan that dwarfs his own size.
1) As Jiraiya wasn’t skilled in genjutsu, he leaned on Shima and Fukasaku for support in that area.
2) Jiraiya found Sage Mode unappealing since it transformed him into a toad-like figure with markings on his face, a beard, an enlarged nose, warts, and webbed hands and feet, which didn’t win him any female admiration. This was due to the fact that he hadn’t perfected the technique fully.
4. Kabuto Yakushi
In Ryuchi Cave, Kabuto mastered Senjutsu under the tutelage of the White Serpent Sage. This proficiency enabled him to activate Sage Mode at will, a feat made possible by his studies on Jugo’s talent for absorbing ambient energy. As he assumes this mode, his scales transform from those of a snake into those of a dragon, significantly boosting his perception skills beyond what Orochimaru, who never fully achieved Sagehood, was capable of.
Visibly, circles around his eyes turn dark and expand to cover his entire body, including his back. Additionally, it seems like he develops four horns, two on each side of his head. In this transformation, Kabuto is no longer just a snake, but rather a dragon. Although the advantages and disadvantages of this Senjutsu-infused snake form are still under investigation, it appears that in this state, Kabuto’s speed and reflexes significantly improve to an extent where he can evade one of Susanoo’s arrows.
Sasuke is renowned for his incredible speed. Moreover, he demonstrates skill in jutsus utilizing the energy from his Sage Mode. For instance, he can temporarily blind and immobilize opponents with a giant dragon that emits a dazzling light beam. Additionally, he possesses the power to animate inanimate objects and bring enemies to life.
3. Minato Namikaze
As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve always been captivated by the character Minato. What sets him apart is his unique ability to master Senjutsu, a technique I marvel at, having learned it directly from the mystical Mount Myōboku. This ancient art allowed him to tap into and accumulate Natural Energy within him, which he could then focus to elevate his combat skills.
The pinnacle of Minato’s prowess lies in his Sage Mode, a state achieved by amassing this energy within his body. By doing so, he was able to amplify all of his capabilities significantly. However, during the Fourth Shinobi World War, though he showed the potential for it, he could only demonstrate this mode once due to the time constraint involved in gathering the necessary energy – a challenge that proved too great given the urgent circumstances he found himself in.
As Minato himself admitted, he’s not exactly a master when it comes to handling and sustaining Senjutsu. In fact, it’s rarely seen him in action during battles due to the time needed to accumulate Natural Energy – a process that clashes with his usual fighting strategy of swift, powerful strikes. Yet, we saw Minato harnessing Senjutsu to enhance his Rasengan and unleash formidable attacks.
2. Hashirama Senju
At a certain point, Hashirama mastered Senjutsu, which enabled him to activate Sage Mode. This skill set him apart by allowing him to enter this form swiftly during combat, an achievement rarely seen among Senjutsu practitioners. This transformation boosted his physical capabilities significantly, including speed and endurance. Additionally, it amplified his Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, and possibly even his Genjutsu skills.
Evidence of his profound artistic talent is demonstrated through his mastery in Wood Release Jutsu – “Several Thousand True Hands,” a technique so massive it overshadows Kurama in size. Upon entering this state, distinctive markings appear on his face: a circular symbol on his forehead encircled by a ring, the telltale signs of Sage Mode – dark circles under his eyes. Additionally, two lines extend towards his eyes, causing them to glow yellow and then descend diagonally. (In the anime, these marks are black instead of red.)
In this form, Hashirama demonstrates exceptional skill in Fūinjutsu, employing a sealing method potent enough to temporarily freeze the Ten-Tails. Furthermore, he is adept at Barrier Ninjutsu, collaborating with three other Hokage to construct an enormous and resilient barrier capable of enduring the Ten-Tails’ massive assaults.
1. Naruto Uzumaki
Naruto mastered senjutsu under one of the reclusive hermits living on Mount Myōboku. If he fails to evenly distribute the three essential energies, he won’t be able to harness the senjutsu chakra. That is, if Naruto doesn’t gather enough natural energy (which should make up less than a third), he won’t be able to utilize the senjutsu chakra; on the other hand, if he gathers too much natural energy (more than a third), he transforms into a frog and subsequently a stone statue.
After undergoing this training, Naruto can convincingly portray Jiraiya in Hermit Mode by harnessing the chakra senjutsu, which is a harmonious blend of traditional chakra and natural energy. Remarkably, he mastered it more swiftly and proficiently than Jiraiya. When Naruto assumes this mode, there’s no partial transformation into a frog; instead, his eyes change to yellow with a horizontal rod-shaped pupil.
