As a dedicated fan who’s been following Kōhei Horikoshi’s journey since the early days of My Hero Academia, I can confidently say that this man has woven magic into our lives with his brilliant storytelling and captivating characters. His life experience, as reflected in his work, is a testament to the power of inspiration and the transformative impact of a single scene from Spider-Man 2. The way he’s taken that moment and spun it into an entire universe of heroes and villains is nothing short of remarkable.
In Chapter #430, Kōhei Horikoshi concluded his ten-year run of the highly acclaimed manga series, My Hero Academia. Boasting over 100 million copies sold, this manga is among the most popular ever produced. Its success has extended beyond comic books to spinoffs, animated films, and video games, making it evident that the series has thrived overall.
In a recent conversation with ComicBook, the creator (mangaka) shares insights about how this comic series significantly transformed his life. The manga was initially published in the Shonen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump by Shueisha starting from July 2014. Currently, the manga collection spans across 14 volumes.
The interview focused on the upcoming movie connected to the My Hero Academia franchise titled “My Hero Academia: You’re Next.” Creator Kōhei Horikoshi expressed his enthusiasm for the increased focus on characters beyond Class A in the film. Regarding his manga series, Horikoshi-san reminisced about a specific scene from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 2 that served as an inspiration for the development of the storyline.
The manga artist stated, “In Spider-Man 2 featuring Tobey Maguire, there’s a sequence where Spider-Man halts an out-of-control train. It’s here that regular passengers catch a glimpse of his true identity. However, a child gives him back the mask and says, ‘I won’t tell anyone.’ To me, this scene encapsulates the essence of what it means to be a hero.”
Kōhei Horikoshi contends that a hero is someone who assists ordinary individuals, in turn receiving help themselves. This scene subtly reveals why the manga’s central character, Deku (Izuku Midoriya), despite lacking a quirk, exhibits extraordinary heroism. The mangaka further stated that he aimed to create a storyline that would resonate with readers without forcing it upon them.
At the conclusion of My Hero Academia, All Might steps in to save Deku one last time, reminiscent of Spider-Man’s supportive bystanders in the movie “Spider-Man 2.” As fans ponder if Deku will reemerge as a hero, it won’t be long before we catch up with our beloved superheroes and villains once more. Keep an eye out for updates on My Hero Academia!
