As a lifelong fan who has followed Mariah Carey‘s journey through her career and personal life, I can’t help but feel deeply saddened by the loss of not one, but two beloved family members. Losing a mother is an unimaginable pain, and to lose a sister on the same day… it’s just heart-wrenching.
Mariah Carey is devastated by the unexpected loss of both her mother Patricia and her sister Alison, who passed away on the same day under unfortunate circumstances. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the multiple Grammy-winning artist expressed her heartache over this weekend’s tragic incident. “My heart is shattered as I mourn the loss of my mother over the weekend,” she said, adding, “Unfortunately, on the same day, my sister also lost her life.”
Instead of providing specific reasons, she gratefully acknowledged everyone’s affection, understanding, and discretion during a difficult period, as she was able to be with her mother in her last moments. The statement further conveyed her gratitude.
Prior to marrying Alfred Roy Carey, Patricia had honed her skills as an opera singer trained at Juilliard and a vocal coach. They went on to have three children together – Alison, Mariah, and a son named Morgan. However, their marriage ended when Mariah was just 3 years old. Over the years, Mariah has been open about the fact that her relationship with her mother has often been difficult.
In her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey”, the singer described her relationship with her mother as complex, filled with contrasts and multiple truths. She noted that, similar to various parts of her life, her experiences with her mother have encompassed a wide spectrum of feelings, not just black-and-white emotions, but a full range of colors, much like a rainbow.
She went into detail about their relationship, stating that they experienced a variety of emotions, even the difficult ones. Yet, their intricate bond kept both hers and Patricia’s hearts entangled. Regardless of its highs and lows, Mariah Carey persevered in their relationship until her mother passed away.
In 2010, the pairing of mother and daughter appeared in ABC’s Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You special, where they sang a duet of O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus. Furthermore, Mariah dedicated her memoir to Patricia with an emotional tribute. In her dedication, she wrote, “To Pat, my mother, I truly believe you did the best you could throughout all of it. I will always love you as well as I possibly can.”
