‘Must Deliver More Consistency’: Warner Bros CEO Responds To Joker: Folie à Deux’s Disappointing Box Office Performance

As a longtime film enthusiast with over two decades of movie-going experience under my belt, I must say that the box office performance of Joker: Folie à Deux has left me somewhat perplexed and disappointed. Having witnessed the meteoric rise of its predecessor, which garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, this sequel’s failure to replicate that feat is a stark reminder that even in Hollywood, hits are not guaranteed.

Contrary to expectations, the follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster Joker movie, which grossed an impressive $204 million worldwide, surprisingly underperformed at the box office. This was surprising given its extensive hype. Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav discussed with The Hollywood Reporter potential reasons for this failure. He suggested that the studio’s inconsistency in production might have played a role in Joker: Folie à Deux failing to surpass the $100 million mark, despite its $200 million budget.

In an industry where success can be elusive, it’s crucial to recognize the need for increased consistency in our studio operations,” said the CEO on November 7, acknowledging that this is a key challenge at their studio following the underperformance of the latest film release. According to Variety, new guidelines have been implemented as a result.

Nevertheless, Zaslav conceded the successes of their production house, with blockbusters such as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice being among them. Released in September, this film grossed over $400 million globally, approaching the year’s highest-grossing movie, Barbie. The CEO pointed out that while there have been some flops, their TV studio is on course to post its most profitable year in scripted content in the last five years.

In the sequel to The Joker, Joaquin Phoenix’s character, the main antagonist of DC, grapples with the repercussions of his actions from the previous movie. Specifically, he is sentenced to death for cold-blooded murder of Murray Franklin, portrayed by Robert De Niro. Interestingly, while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital, Joker discovers both a profound romance and the musical talent that had been dormant within him, according to the plot summary.

In the upcoming film, it’s worth noting that the character Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzel, also known as Harley Quinn, is portrayed by the renowned pop star Lady Gaga – a departure from the original movie. A significant shift in this sequel is the introduction of a musical component, which the creators emphasize serves as a unique method for the main characters to express themselves and interact without needing words.

In numerous interviews while promoting the movie, the Academy Award-winning actor openly shared his apprehension about singing alongside Lady Gaga. However, they intentionally decided to leave their vocals unaltered and free of auto-tune enhancements.
