According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been reported that George Clinton is pursuing a lawsuit against Armen Boladian, his ex-business partner and representative. The lawsuit claims copyright violation and fraud, with the intention of regaining control over his music library.
According to reports from a publication, court records submitted in a Florida federal court on Tuesday claim that Boladian, along with multiple businesses he owns, has been involved in long-term deceptive practices. These allegedly include falsifying signatures on agreements related to Clinton’s music rights transfers over several decades.
The accusation alleges that Boladian deceitfully gained control over about 90% of Clinton’s song collection, and simultaneously failed to pay out tens of millions of dollars in earnings from those songs as royalties.
Beyond asking for undetermined compensation, Clinton is also demanding an immediate injunction from the court to halt Boladian from accepting bids for his music rights, which he has been rumored to be marketing. The musician is said to be invoking a provision in copyright law that enables creators to regain control of their works after a specific timeframe.
Richard Busch, attorney for Boladian, plans to submit a motion to dismiss the current lawsuit and request penalties. It’s worth mentioning that this lawsuit is just the latest in a long line of lawsuits Clinton has brought against Bridgeport Music (one of Boladian’s companies) and Boladian over the past three decades, all dealing with similar matters. Busch underscored that Clinton has lost every single case brought thus far.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Clinton asserts that the documents used to transfer ownership of his works were allegedly falsified. Back in 2001, a federal court sided with Bridgeport Music regarding the rights to several of his songs.
The legal document outlines several accusations against Boladian, such as deceiving Clinton into endorsing empty and standard contracts which ultimately gave control of his collection to another party.
According to the report, the lawsuit claims that Boladian allegedly paid others to deceptively assert ownership over the work of the plaintiff. This was done with the intention of swindling the plaintiff out of royalties generated from these works. As an illustration, it is alleged that Boladian compensated Mark Bass to falsely present himself as the owner of “Anybody Get Funked Up,” thereby depriving the plaintiff of his rightful share in the song’s royalties.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Clinton’s lawsuit claims that Boladian has committed fraud, violated copyright laws, and breached their duties of trust and loyalty, among other accusations.
