As a devoted fan of Muni Long, I find myself deeply moved by her courage to share her personal journey through her music. Her latest album, Revenge, is a poignant testament to her resilience and growth as an artist and a person. The track “Ruined Me” particularly resonates with me, as it seems to encapsulate the complexities of love, loss, and self-discovery.
As a die-hard admirer of Muni Long, I can’t help but feel a profound connection as she shares her intimate journey in her latest album, Revenge. In true Muni fashion, she bares her soul and discloses the end of her nine-year marriage to Raysean Hairston, weaving their story into the fabric of her music. During a heartfelt conversation on The Cruz Show on Real 92.3, she delved deep into her personal life, describing her new album as if it were the pages straight from her diary, offering us a glimpse into her heart and experiences.
In discussing the final track of the album titled “Ruined Me,” she disclosed that this particular song arose from her separation with Hairston.
In a straightforward and conversational manner, “When I write, I draw on my own experiences because it comes from my personal viewpoint. I can only discuss what I’m familiar with. However, this is the first time I’ve included my real life in my work. It’s no surprise to anyone who knows me…I’ve been married for nine years, but unfortunately, things didn’t work out between my spouse and me.” The singer explained.
In simpler terms, Long explained her breakup with Hairston by stating she needed personal space as she’s currently thriving in life and doesn’t want to deal with unnecessary drama. She hinted that Hairston tended to argue excessively over trivial matters, which she found unacceptable given their shared beautiful child and mutual financial responsibilities, as everyone has bills. The Grammy winner underlined this point by stating they were doing well despite some outstanding bills.
Although Long-time admired Hairston as her past love, she decided she didn’t wish to postpone her life any longer for him to grow up. “I’m not prepared to suspend my life, my enthusiasm, and my joy for you to catch up,” the Time Machine singer expressed. “Sadly, you may acquire it in a year…but I’m sorry, by then, I might have moved on.”
In an NPR interview in February 2023, Long expressed admiration for her union with Hairston, noting that over their eight-year relationship, they had shared a deep emotional bond – a connection she thinks is essential for everyone.
In addition, she discussed working together with her former spouse in their professional lives during her interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show. Notably, Hairston has contributed to the co-writing and co-production of some of her songs. During that time, she acknowledged that her ex-husband had a soothing effect on her and they shared a harmonious relationship.
