From the debut of Doctor Who‘s first season onward, our focus has shifted to the peculiar activities of Mrs. Flood. Initially, she seemed like just Ruby’s friendly but inquisitive neighbor, yet a twist occurred when she addressed the audience directly, revealing her knowledge of what a TARDIS is. Following this revelation, Mrs. Flood’s more ominous and manipulative nature began to unfurl as she made appearances across various spaces, tailing the Fifteenth Doctor throughout seasons one and two. She is acquainted with both his recent companions, Ruby Sunday and Belinda Chandra, and seems intent on employing the Vindicator readings for an undisclosed purpose. In Doctor Who‘s second season, episode six, we discover in a post-credits scene that Mrs. Flood is none other than the Rani, a renegade Time Lord and adversary from the classic era.
In this episode, Mrs. Flood is mostly absent. At first, she’s observing the Doctor, Belinda, and the Vindicator. However, she quickly vanishes into a cosmic void, only reappearing once the credits start playing.
The latest participant from the Interstellar Song Festival to be resuscitated awkwardly steps onto the stage, inquiring about the Doctor first thing. This adorable duo and the Doctor’s recent companions inform her that he is no more. She assures them it’s safe and explains how her dual brainstem froze, a fatal condition for Time Ladies. Later on, Mrs. Flood splits herself into two entities, similar to the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors doing so.
In a fascinating twist, the character (portrayed by Archie Panjabi) separates into two entities, with one assuming a more dominant role over Mrs. Flood, whom she refers to as a Rani, while she herself is THEE Rani. This implies they are not on equal footing at all. This development, given that ‘Rani’ is an anagram of ‘rain’ and much rain can lead to a flood, does not come as a surprise to many viewers of the series. The new entity, who calls herself the Rani, takes Mrs. Flood with her and mentions having an appointment to arrange, promising to bring the Doctor unimaginable terror. Oh my!
In the upcoming Season 2 finale, the return of Rani, who first appeared four decades ago, along with the original companion and the Doctor’s granddaughter, Susan, promises a highly dramatic and potentially exciting climax.
The Rani’s Past in Doctor Who, Explained
In the classic period of “Doctor Who,” the character known as the Rani was a morally questionable scientist who happened to be a Time Lady, portrayed by Kate O’Mara. Tragically, O’Mara passed away in 2014. Her actions often involved conducting unscrupulous experiments on humans and various other species, eventually resulting in her expulsion from Gallifrey.
In 1985, the character known as the Rani debuted in the “Doctor Who” episode titled “The Mark of the Rani.” Unlike the Master who seems to be fixated (and perhaps infatuated) with the Doctor, the Rani’s primary focus is on science and exploration, going to great lengths to achieve her goals. She’s quite fashionable, elegant, and intelligent, even possessing a TARDIS of her own. Remarkably, her TARDIS has the ability to alter its shape due to an active chameleon circuit.
In her initial encounter, she confronts the Sixth Doctor and his companion, Peri Brown. The Rani is found ruling a planet where she subjects its inhabitants to cruel experiments, one of which involves extracting neurochemicals from humans’ brains across different eras in history. It falls upon the Doctor to thwart both her schemes and those of the Master. In what appears to be a trap, he seemingly immobilizes them.
However, she repeatedly makes a comeback, as depicted in “Time of the Rani” (1987) and “Dimensions in Time” (1993), a charity special following the end of the Classic era. Interestingly, her actions led to the Sixth Doctor transforming into the Seventh Doctor. Her last appearance pitted her against companion Ace, who is still present. Maybe we’ll see her return for future events.
You’d enjoy hearing the tales of the Rani, which are now streaming on Tubi. We haven’t missed an opportunity to provide you with something delightful!
What Does Mrs. Flood and the Rani Want in Doctor Who Season 2?
It’s uncertain at this point, but it’s clear she enjoys inflicting pain on different species and causing destruction for her bizarre scientific tests. There’s a possibility that she might be carrying out something dreadful in the cosmos that will lead to the world’s end on May 24, 2025. If this is true, the Doctor will need to find an ingenious way to restore balance.
I’m just as eager as everyone else to welcome the Rani back to our screens, a request that’s been echoed since the show’s revival two decades ago. Now it’s a matter of watching how Mrs. Flood and the Rani will interact with the Fifteenth Doctor.
