Chappell Roan, an up-and-coming figure in the music scene, has received opportunities for lead roles in acting. However, despite having the necessary training, Roan prefers to focus on her music as the thought of acting causes significant stress for her.

In an interview with Bowen Yang for Interview Magazine, she explains her discomfort with actors and the film-making industry, which has led her to choose not to be involved in it. She puts it bluntly, “I say this with a sense of tranquility, affection, and good wishes: Actors can be quite eccentric.”

Roan, who turned down several major roles due to the unpredictable and intense nature of theater, puts it this way: “I understand what you’re saying, but not really. I initially ventured into music with the hope that it would help me break into acting. I then relocated to Los Angeles, and my reaction was something like, ‘Forget it.’ The industry is truly terrifying, and it feels beyond my control.”

Compared to her independent music career, she finds the movie industry overwhelming and unmanageable. Originally, she ventured into songwriting as a means to break into Hollywood. The artist behind “My Kink Is Karma” expressed, “I’ve been taught how to act, but it’s the most distressing experience for me.”

After moving to Los Angeles, she found that her viewpoint shifted. Upon her arrival, it became apparent to her that a career in music, rather than acting, would give her more creative freedom and maintain her autonomy.

Chappell Roan, the artist behind The Pink Pony Club hits, appreciates the freedom to release records whenever she pleases without adhering to strict schedules or set deadlines, a luxury not usually afforded to performers in theater. Despite multiple invitations for lead roles, she has consistently turned them down. In her own words, “I’d rather be arrested, as I am well-versed in navigating myself within jail.”

Chappell Roan possesses the abilities required for a film career, but she chooses to keep singing because she feels she has greater authority and autonomy there. If she were ever to return to acting, it would be for a role that fits perfectly, arrives at the ideal moment, and fulfills her desire for both independence and artistic expression.
