‘Most Of The Music…’: Todd Phillips Reflects On Making Music For His Latest Release Joker Folie a Duex; Details Inside

As an ardent fan who has been captivated by the mesmerizing world of cinema since I was a child, I must admit that Joker: Folie a Deux has left me spellbound! The musical format, the intriguing narrative, and the exceptional performances by Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga have made this sequel an unforgettable masterpiece.

The movie “Joker: Folie a Deux” premiered on October 4 and has left viewers captivated with its unique musical style. Director Todd Phillips spoke about crafting music for the characters Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in the sequel to the 2019 film.

During their recent chat with Variety, the filmmaker expressed that the entire team has been consistently brainstorming ideas on transforming the movie into a stunning musical masterpiece.

During an interview with a media outlet, Phillips revealed that he started mapping out Part 2 immediately following the initial triumph of Joker. Regarding the melodies and musical aspects, the director expressed, “We asked ourselves, ‘How can we surpass what we’ve already achieved?’

He further added,  “Most of the music in the movie is really just dialogue… It’s just Arthur not having the words to say what he wants to say, so he sings them instead.”

Additionally, the director disclosed that he requested Lady Gaga to sing off-key so that Phoenix could deliver a comparable performance. Notably, the singer also admitted to a media outlet that she and the actor often burst into songs during their conversations.

She stated, “We wondered what circumstances would allow two individuals to suddenly burst into song during a discussion?” Gaga further commented, “Where does the melody originate if only the characters can hear it? Neither Arthur nor Lee are trained vocalists, yet their singing shouldn’t sound polished.

In conversation with Vogue, the actress from A Star is Born mentioned that she had to give up some of her musical skills to record for the movie. She likened her singing in Joker: Folie a Deux to the character she portrayed alongside Bradley Cooper in her film.

In simpler terms, the singer with a soft voice commented, “Ally Maine, as portrayed in ‘A Star Is Born’, is a musical artist, but this film has nothing to do with creating music.

In the upcoming movie “Joker: Folie a Deux,” Arthur Fleck, who is a struggling comedian and has multiple personalities, will find love in the form of Harley Quinn while he’s being held at Arkham State Hospital. The film’s summary explains that Arthur is grappling with his dual identity and it is during his time at the hospital that he encounters Harley Quinn.

Joker: Folie a Deux is running successfully in theaters.
