I’m always amazed by how anime creators handle imprisonment – it never truly holds anyone back! These stories are incredible at showing just how resourceful characters become when they’re trapped. We see everything from seemingly inescapable island prisons and hidden government facilities to massive, cult-created structures and brutal underground camps. These ‘prison break’ storylines really put the heroes (and sometimes villains!) in impossible situations, forcing them to come up with unbelievably clever plans. I’ve collected twenty of the best examples from anime series and movies, and it’s fascinating to see how the specific prison, its rules, and what’s at stake all influence the escape – or even just the attempt itself.
‘One Piece’ (1999) – Impel Down

The Impel Down arc centers around Luffy’s daring attempt to break into the heavily guarded, underwater Impel Down prison. He’s determined to reach Level 6, where the most dangerous criminals are held. The prison is structured in layers, each more treacherous than the last, featuring deadly creatures, freezing temperatures, and a brutal staff led by Magellan. As Luffy fights his way down, he encounters both old enemies and unexpected allies, using the resulting confusion to his advantage. This arc is a direct lead-in to the Marineford arc, and the numerous escapes dramatically change the power dynamics of the pirate world.
‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean’ (2021) – Green Dolphin Street Prison

This section of the story takes place inside a Florida prison, where Jolyne Cujoh learns to control her unique ability while dealing with the challenges of prison life. The prison itself – with its locked-down sections, constant monitoring, and punishment areas – becomes the setting for battles that happen in close quarters with limited options. Villains exploit the staff and other prisoners, using everyday rules and procedures to set traps. The story uses things like prisoner transfers, visiting hours, and work assignments to create opportunities for escape – or to block them.
‘The Promised Neverland’ (2019) – Grace Field House Escape

Grace Field House appears to be a perfect orphanage, but it’s actually a farm where children are raised as food for demons. Emma, Norman, and Ray secretly create a detailed escape plan, carefully studying the daily schedules, supplies, and security around the orphanage. Their plan relies on creating maps, making ropes, and finding gaps in the guards’ patrols. They also need perfect timing and distractions to avoid being caught immediately if the alarm is raised.
‘Golden Kamuy’ (2018) – Abashiri Prison Arc

Abashiri Prison in Hokkaido is where different groups clash, all trying to find pieces of a map tattooed onto the skin of prisoners. Sugimoto’s team works with and against ex-convicts to break into the heavily guarded prison during the harsh winter. They have to make quick decisions about which routes to take and who to trust because the warden controls the corridors and locks down sections of the prison. This struggle for the map pieces changes who’s in control and sends the search throughout northern Japan.
‘Deadman Wonderland’ (2011) – Scar Chain Escape

Ganta Igarashi is wrongly accused and sent to a unique prison – it’s also a theme park where inmates called “Deadmen” battle using powers fueled by their blood. A group called the Scar Chain plans a complex escape, relying on stolen access cards, knowledge of guard schedules, and communication within the prison. But the Warden throws unexpected obstacles in their path, forcing them to constantly adapt their plan. The escape attempt reveals the hidden connections between inmate groups and the secret areas within the prison’s entertainment-focused exterior.
‘Baki Hanma’ (2021) – Arizona State Prison

Baki intentionally gets himself thrown in prison to fight Mr. Unchained, a notorious inmate who has almost complete freedom inside. The prison’s rules, security measures, and even allowed fights all play a role in how conflicts happen. Baki’s biggest challenge is dealing with the special treatment Mr. Unchained receives. Every confrontation is carefully controlled by the prison’s procedures, from restricted movement to lockdowns and yard regulations.
‘Fist of the North Star’ (1984) – Cassandra Prison Arc

Cassandra is a heavily guarded prison built after a disaster, holding captured martial arts experts. Kenshiro must fight his way past the defenses and overcome a leadership that uses fear to maintain control. The success of the rescue depends on the prisoners’ abilities and conditions, as well as navigating the tight, confined spaces of the prison. This storyline emphasizes how essential resources like water and food are used to control people when society breaks down.
‘Fairy Tail’ (2009) – Tower of Heaven

The Tower of Heaven was built by slaves and is meant to amplify magical power. Erza Scarlet’s history as a prisoner connects the guild’s goal to destroy the tower’s source of power. The tower is protected by magical barriers, guards, and its unique design, which focuses energy for a specific ceremony. To stop the tower from becoming fully operational, the guild must simultaneously damage several important control points.
‘Boruto: Naruto Next Generations’ (2017) – Hozuki Castle Arc

Hozuki Castle is a highly secure ninja prison in the Land of Wind, designed to suppress any use of jutsu through chakra restraints and solitary confinement. Boruto sneaks in disguised, aiming to uncover what a criminal organization is up to. His mission involves avoiding detection while maneuvering through rival prisoner groups and guard patrols. He’ll need to either find a way around the prison’s sealing techniques or obtain them to escape if things go wrong.
‘Kaiji’ (2007) – Underground Labor Camp

Kaiji loses a dangerous bet and is forced to work off his debt in a hidden underground facility. This facility operates like its own little world, using a special currency, strict rationing, and controlled free time to keep everyone in line. Kaiji tries to escape by finding loopholes in the system and taking advantage of the camp’s daily routine. His final attempt to get out relies on carefully planned diversions and making the most of the few resources he has.
‘Berserk’ (1997) – Tower of Rebirth Rescue

I was absolutely captivated by the daring rescue of Griffith! To think they infiltrated a royal citadel – navigating through terrifying torture chambers and secret passages – was incredible. It wasn’t just brute force; they had to be incredibly stealthy, relying on uniforms, perfect timing, and a deep understanding of the castle’s layout, including hidden stairways and sealed cells. Seeing them pull it off was breathtaking, and it completely changed the Band of the Hawk, altering their path forever. It was a pivotal moment, and I couldn’t look away.
‘Akudama Drive’ (2020) – Kansai Prison Break

A team of criminals is brought together to break into a highly secure transport and prison complex. They have a detailed plan, with each member – including hackers, messengers, and those skilled in combat – responsible for specific tasks. The operation is timed to coincide with train schedules and security checkpoints. Once the team starts the attack, automated drones and lockdown procedures are activated. The prison system cleverly uses the city’s streets and public transportation as part of its overall security perimeter.
‘The Numbers’ (2016) – First Escape Plan

Nanba Prison is known for its advanced security and the surprisingly skilled escape attempts of its inmates, who approach breaking out as an art form. The first major escape plan highlights how careful planning, knowledge of guard patterns, and homemade tools are used to try and bypass the prison’s biometric security systems. However, the warden’s unpredictable responses force inmates to constantly adjust their strategies. The plan shows that even if an inmate manages to overcome one obstacle, they still face many more layers of security before they can potentially escape.
‘Bungo Stray Dogs’ (2016) – Meursault Prison

Okay, so picture this: there’s this super secret prison in Europe where they’re holding people with powers, but the whole place is designed to take those powers away. It’s built with these modular cells and these fields that mess with anything supernatural, meaning your usual tricks just don’t work. And it’s not just about locking people up – different groups are constantly trying to control who gets moved where and who gets access, all as part of some bigger game. The story really focuses on the little things – visits, medical checks, even just when the alarms go off – because those moments become opportunities, like weaknesses to exploit, for both the prisoners and the people trying to control them. It’s all about turning everyday routines into tactical advantages.
‘Tokyo Ghoul’ (2014) – Cochlea Raid

The Cochlea facility acts as the main prison for dangerous ghouls, with specially designed cells to accommodate their unique bodies. A raid is launched to free certain prisoners, using distractions to keep the CCG’s quick-response teams occupied. The prison’s layout forces fights into tight spaces, increasing the danger for both the attackers and those defending it. The result of the raid will shift the balance of power between the different ghoul groups and the CCG.
‘My Hero Academia’ (2016) – Tartarus Prison Break

Tartarus is a highly secure, offshore prison for the most dangerous criminals, featuring unique containment methods. The escape attempt is a carefully planned attack from both outside and within the prison, taking advantage of communication disruptions caused by a larger ongoing crisis. The prison’s defenses – including automated systems, divided sections, and restrictions on air travel – are tested with each stage of the breakout. This escape leads to widespread releases of prisoners, drastically changing life for both heroes and ordinary people.
‘Banana Fish’ (2018) – Rikers Island Arc

While imprisoned at Rikers Island, Ash Lynx must forge alliances to stay alive and maintain contact with people on the outside. He gains influence by controlling access to forbidden items, visitor schedules, and guard assignments, all of which impact the flow of information. Navigating the legal system and requesting transfers become crucial, just as important as moving around within the prison itself. This storyline connects the harsh realities of prison life to the larger criminal plot surrounding the dangerous drug known as ‘Banana Fish’.
‘Moriarty the Patriot’ (2020) – Newgate Prison Infiltration

A carefully planned operation aims to influence a major case by working from inside London’s Newgate Prison. Using disguises, fake papers, and precise timing to avoid detection during routine checks, the team gains access to secure areas. They exploit the prison’s systems for tracking records and moving prisoners to arrange crucial meetings. What happens within Newgate’s walls directly impacts investigations and trials happening outside.
‘Naruto Shippuden the Movie: Blood Prison’ (2011)

Naruto is unfairly imprisoned at Hozuki Castle, a high-security ninja jail run by a warden who can block people’s chakra. The movie shows us how the prison works – the rules for holding inmates, how they’re identified, and the punishments for breaking rules – all of which make a direct fight risky. To escape, Naruto needs to find proof of wrongdoing, make friends with other prisoners, and figure out how the prison’s records are being altered. Ultimately, the escape reveals that someone is using the prison as part of a bigger scheme.
‘Danganronpa: The Animation’ (2013) – Hope’s Peak Academy Confinement

The students find themselves trapped within Hope’s Peak Academy, forced to compete and even betray each other to survive. The school operates like a prison, but instead of bars, it uses constant monitoring, investigations, and limited access to different areas. To escape, they must decipher clues left by the headmaster, find weaknesses in the system, and discover who is behind it all. Their daily routine – including classes, nighttime restrictions, and locked rooms – controls how quickly they can make progress and uncover the truth.
