Following the success of the first movie, the team – producer Todd Garner, writer Greg Russo, and director McQuoid – began discussing plans for future installments. These ideas included spin-off films centered around characters like Johnny Cage and Sub-Zero, and a continuation of the main story. In 2022, the studio confirmed Mortal Kombat II was officially in development, with Jeremy Slater writing the screenplay and McQuoid returning to direct.
Filming began in Australia in June 2023. Production was temporarily halted in mid-July because of the SAG-AFTRA strike, but continued again in November and wrapped up in late January 2024.
As a huge movie fan, I’m really into this story! It’s about Earthrealm’s heroes teaming up with Johnny Cage to take on Shao Kahn. He’s this seriously powerful villain who’s basically threatening to destroy everything and everyone who’s trying to protect their world.
The new movie, *Mortal Kombat II*, promises larger-scale fights, more thrilling action, and the return of popular characters. Plus, with a third film already planned, the *Mortal Kombat* series is continuing strong.
