Mortal Kombat II Delayed to 2026

Mortal Kombat II has officially been delayed.

The much-awaited sequel by Warner Bros. and New Line has been postponed by about seven months, shifting its initial theater release from October 24, 2025, to May 15, 2026.

Summer Over Halloween

According to a report from Deadline, the date shift is strategic.

Although the provocative red-band trailer garnered an unprecedented 107 million views worldwide, the studio has chosen to release it during the more impactful summer season instead of taking the chance with a late October premiere.

By October 2025, it seems the schedule is filling up quite a bit. Movies like “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” from 20th Century Studios, featuring Jeremy Allen White, and Paramount’s “Regretting You” are expected to be released around the same period. Typically, the Halloween weekend doesn’t generate high box office revenues, which might potentially affect the continued success of “Mortal Kombat II”.

The upcoming May 2026 launch offers the sequel directed by Simon McQuoid ample space to thrive, thereby increasing its chances of ruling the initial summer cinema charts.

The site notes that their hearing test screenings have been successful, aligning with recent comparisons suggesting the excitement is similar to that of the box-office phenomenon, Avengers: Endgame.

About the Sequel

In the sequel titled “Mortal Kombat II,” the violent narrative of Earthrealm’s combatants continues. Newcomer Karl Urban portrays Johnny Cage in this production, while Hiroyuki Sanada reprises his role as Scorpion, Joe Taslim returns as the revived Bi-Han/Noob Saibot, and Lewis Tan is back as Cole Young. The narrative unfolds following Sub-Zero’s demise in the previous film, with Bi-Han being resurrected through dark sorcery to wage war again – this time reborn as the vengeful specter Noob Saibot.

In the franchise, for the very first time, the sequel presents a showdown between Scorpion and Noob Saibot, spanning across all the games as well.
